More time in the Sim

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Seems there are moves afoot to change the ratio of flight time and Sim time for the two winged master race.

"Under current training rules, RAF pilots spend 70 per cent of their time in the air with 30 per cent in simulators. Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston said he wants this ratio reversed."

"According to The Times pilots will be able to use some of the hours accumulated in the simulator to count towards their qualification as pilots."

Are they not struggling to maintain currency as it is without reducing actual real training? I smell someone trying to get recognised for achieving a 'Carbon Neutral' footprint.
BINGO Spearmint!!

Also seems like a cash saving exercise and not in a good way either.

Remember using an equipment emulator on PC at T055f0rd back early 2000s for our final Depth C equipment on the JT course. Had very little time on the fault finding equipment. An emulator or simulator IS NOT a substitute for the real thing!!!! Useful, but NOT a substitute.

Sights, sounds, smells, fields of view and depth.... it feels so different to me!!!

Just my opinion.

And every real flight not taken, as well as changing life for the aircrew, also means 1 less see off & see in for the ground crew. Fewer opportunities there for practice & CPD. More & more disassociation from the rest of the station who will hear (& feel 'part of') fewer and fewer actual sorties. The ethos of the service is &always has been that everybody on a station makes operations possible; the less the non-aircrew see/hear/feel actual flights the weaker that bond becomes and, ultimately, the less effective the service will become. What is not learned slowly in peace time cannot be learned rapidly on operations.

It's probably being resisted, remind me who runs the Air Force, however, the future of small multi role military aircraft is going to be unmanned and probably unpiloted, I think this will be when blue suits disappear.

Smaller less complicated aircraft will need fewer fettling and fewer technicians, oh and with no need to maintain currency there will be a lot fewer sorties, training and war gaming will be virtual.

Unfortunately that is the "Rational" cost analysis in a business sense from Bean Counters and Data Analysts.

All fun and game until there is an EMP in the sky or the computer systems are hacked!!

For the future to be totally unmanned is blinkered IMHO!!

Will there be a sequel to his Xmas movie? He hasn’t got out and about to meet the troops, he’s all woke and PC driven, and it’s a great advert for reducing £60,000,000 retention pay.
All we need now is for the RAF Regiment to be equipped with loud hailers for them to simulate shooting, by shouting ‘bang’.

Also not forgetting it must be painful using the ejector seat and bloody expensive shooting through the Simulator roof. :ROFLMAO:
Not being a brightest of fellow here i.e. ex store man. seeing the issue in logging flying hours is a must for many pilots. Would a alternative aircraft that allows you to maintain the flying hours while defending the realm. Fast jets one week alternative the next. Please feel free to mock as I say ex store man.

Ooh remember that at Swinderby Bang Bang sticks during basic training. Bagged four fellow recruits with the parade rifle.

After the Jockey's had an hour's stint in the sim it's then off to the nearest kid's playground to sit on the roundabout and swings - whilst a fellow aviator spins or pushes the Jockey really really fast and hard to get that 'g' simulation feeling....."Slow down....slow down! I'm slippin' off an' I feel a bit sick".......
