Hi there,

I have served 11 years with the Army as a mechanic, I am in two minds whether to terminate my service after 12 years OR take a leap of faith and transfer to the RAF (carrying on as a mechanic) your opinions would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Frazer.

I left army as sandbag infantry bod after 3 years and had a couple of years in civvi street, which were CRAP! Now a RAF engineer, got my tapes blah blah. Life is a lot easier here, fitness is fcuk all, no CFT's and its just generally better. Be careful if you want to come as a aircraft enginner though as FLM's ah hem i mean AMM's are here... look in the AFCO to see what that entails! Possibly better to come as a ground techie or an int analyst(!) as promotion seems to shine on them (preparing for comments).

A wise move mate..................and your time in the army 'should' count towards your pension.........................JPA willing!!

Yeah, it does, i got 2 years, as the other year was 'for the queen'. Hmmm.

If you do decide to take the plunge and join the RAF, make sure that the AFCO let you know exactly how your prior service will affect you. An old friend of mine who made the same move came back from PSF in shock one day when he found out that although he had signed a 12 year contract when he joined up, they were actually counting the time he spent in the Army toward that 12 years. So he thought he had 3 years service left, and was a little surprised to find out that in reality he only had about 6 months left.

Would definately agree that promotion is fairly quick for Int Analysts, however a trade review has just finished and I think that may mean that promotion will slow down to normal again. That said its a growing trade and I wouldn't want to do anything else.

I have seen to direct transfers from the army and Navy in recent months. One was a full screw in the Life Guards, the other was a killick OM. They are now LAC fftr's on full pay, marking time for two years before they can proceed up the cpl's pay scales.

Full pension rights are also allowed.

My advice would be to see if the army will let you go, both those guys had no end of problems getting released from their service and accepted into the RAF.

We have all hjeard of remustering? well this is called rearming and it is covered by QR's

I knew one of your chaps, a staffy, employed on the JRTU at Honz. He transferred over and as he was Q'd up the ying yang became an EngO. Nice bloke, played mean guitar, ah! the days of "Wasted NRG"

Dont transfer, we got our own army and dont need you. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Rearm if you can, its far better than being discharged and then joining up again.

cheers guys for the rest of your opinions, and dispite the comment from numb nuts i think i will dive in feet first and attempt to transfer. cant wait to tell my boss on tuesday!

Hi Thread Bear

Having made the switch myself over 18 months ago I can say it is the best choice I ever made. The Hierarchy treat you as a person, not just a number.
The RAF changed their policy on doing basic training though. It used to be 2 weeks kit and post, but I had to endure the full 9 weeks. Not a great hard ship really, compared to Army basic, but this may be dependant on what rank you are. You stay on your Army pay for the first 2 years, which softens the blow, a tad.

All in all I can thourghly recommend it.

Good luck
