I read somewhere on the RAF website of an individual who left the RAF, joined as a reserve, and when an opening was available in the trade, moved back into the regular commission.

Is it possible to move from the reserves into the full time role, or did I misread?

Thank you.

Of course, you go to the AFCO and sign up.

Do not get Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS) confused with simply moving from reserve to regular. People on an FTRS contract do not get paid the X factor, are not entitled to MQ, Medical or Dental and cannot just be sent off anywhere or told to go on guard. They can stick 2 weeks notice in at any time IIRC.

I have not heard of a mechanism to sideslip directly from reserve to regular bypassing training and retaining rank in the RAF (I believe the Army does have such a system in certain circumstances)

It used to be called S type engagement in the Army. If you were a TA type you volunteered to serve with the regs for 6 months, and could often extend to 12. At the end of that, if you were accepted and there was a slot there was a possibility of transferring to regular. Think the highest rank that could be retained though was full screw.
