Hi guys looking to buy a place in Crete to use as a holiday home before retiring there permanent in about 10 years time. I just wanted to ask any E-goaters what is the real situation like at the moment in Greece as we have all heard the horror stories.

Wait until it all goes horribly wrong give it 6 months to calm down, then you will be able to buy a palace for 50p.

I'm a bit pushed for time to give you the full gen at the moment but just a word of warning. I moved out to Skiathos in 2008 and it's all gone tits. I've been back in the Uk for a year as the writing was on the wall a couple of years ago. I still own a business but it's worth fcuk all really. A lot of people I know own houses that they bought a few years ago that they could hardly give away because of the banana republic way of doing things. My favourite saying to my wife in 2010 when it all started going wrong was "they'll be back on donkeys within a decade". She really scoffed at that but is now really really pleased we came back when we did. I'm ninety grand down but it could of been a lot worse if we'd of tried to flog a dead horse or engaged in the ostrich approach to being an immigrant in a failing country.

You will be able to get a bargain though, but I'd wait until after the civil war.
