Is it possible to live in the mess at one unit and get a MQ at another at the same time?

I'm getting posted in 4 months time and I would like to move the family in to an MQ at the new unit soonest but need to retain my room in the mess until I move.

Any info much appreciated.

You will only be entitled to the quarter at the new unit within a certain time before your official start date on JPA. (not too sure how long this is, 2 weeks rings a bell, but deffo not 4 months)

Basically, you apply to the Defence Estates HIC (housing info centre) in charge of the new unit and they will ask you the date on your JPA assignment order. They will use this date when sourcing a MQ for you and a move in date.

This is from my experience on my last posting in Sep this year (2009)

There are ways. My next door neighbour came back from cloggyland and got a quarter at Scampton whilst he went to Brize. Seen as TCW were moving to Scampton it saved a move 12 months from when he got posted. Unfortunately TCW then moved to Leeming and he had to to a bit of wheeling and dealing to sort it. Oh well the best laid plans....he he..

I'm sure the scribblies will put you right.

Many thanks for the reply....I thought this might be the case.
I would have asked PSF but I'm at an Army unit and ..........I'll say no more!
Thanks again:PDT_Xtremez_21:

You could try and apply for a surplus Quarter at your new unit before your posting; speak to the HIC about the availability & possibility.

You're not entitled until the day you are posted but if housing is available you can have one up to one month before. It'll come down to how helpful your DE rep is.

I seem to recall some obscure QR or somesuch that states you can't have 2 "cheap" residences at the same time, ie the mess and a FMQ... One had to be at full market rate...

I got my new MQ 3 months before I moved, but that involved letters from docs etc etc.
Ask a scribbly in the know or give the HIC a ring. They are usually really helpfull and if the space is there they will sort it out.
