New £40k Bursary to tempt Veterans into Teaching

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Sorry, this is probably going to be more of a rant than a thread, and might possibly be better suited to the Pigs Bar...

So, they've replaced the failing Troops to Teachers program, with another bursary-type program - this time, they're offering £40,000 bursaries for ex-Mob types to go into teaching.

Unfortunately they've caveated this scheme with the same ridiculous criteria that caused the TTT program to fail - you have to be uneducated in order to qualify. Not only that, but you don't get the money until you're 12 months into a 3 year course - so self-funded for a year?!?

TTT didn't work because the kind of people who wanted to be teachers after leaving the Mob were academically minded - and, thanks to a recent push by the military, most likely had a degree or two. But if you have a degree, you don't qualify for the program!!??

I have a BSc Hons, I'm doing a MSc now, and I'd love to be a teacher when I leave the RAF. But I don't qualify for this scheme - because I'm overqualified! If they just offered ex Mob types free Initial Teacher Training, surely it would cost them a hell of a lot less??!!

WB - Its worth looking around if you really want to get into teaching especially STEM. My wife is currently doing her PGCE 2ndry Maths with Oxford University and she has received a bursary of £24000, and even their NQT year they are demanding a salary of up to £28K.

If its HE you are interested in many Uni's will take 'SME's and then put them through their 'in-house' PGCE for free.

To go into teaching but avoiding the potty training, glue and scissors, puberty, spots and acne phases of learning try HE. HE is rewarding teaching 16+ means you spend your time passing knowledge onto almost adults and post 16 most students actually want to be there. HE kept me out of mischief and in paid employment for many years

Pen.. My daughters boyfriend (I haven't managed to scare him off yet.. but there is still time) is a STEM NQT in one of the local grammars and is earning no where near the £28K you suggest.

Starting pay for NQT is between 19k and 21K depending on area

Enrollment day at a FEC

Me "Why do you want to be a Plumber?"

Idiot "I don't"

"So why do you want to do this course?"

Replies with big stupid grin on his face "I've signed for '''Forest Green Rovers"

To attend the football academy they have to be attending college.

To which I replied "The bricklayers are enrolling over there"

"But I don't want to be a bricklayer"

"You don't want to be a Plumber either so f**k off and go and bother them!!!!!!" 😬

To keep the 'Youth Unemployment Figures' down the Government (You) pay the College's to take in all and sundry, whether they are capable or not! Not In Employment, Not In Education, a phrase every opposition party of any colour loves.

PS. There were also some great students who were a pleasure to teach 😉
