Hi all, I'm new to the site so thought I'd post here.
Have applied for Aircraft Technician (avionics) and have the aptitude test a week today.
Working hard to get my fitness up to scratch, currently running 2.4km in 11:21, which is passable as I'll probably be 30 before the fitness test but i don't wanna just pass, i want to get to green standard.

I have been lurking for a couple of days and already picked up some helpful stuff so thanks.

Welcome to the site. What you been up to before considering the RAF?

I started a job as a computer technician to help fund me through uni, that was 10 years ago. I've always wanted to get into aircraft maintenance and i studied aeronautical technology at uni, which to be honest was a waste of time as the degree i spent 3 years studying for is pretty worthless in the aviation industry.

I got comfortable in this job and i got married, had kids, then my wife went back to uni so as she is graduating next month and the kids are now 3 & 5 the time feels right to pursue what i wanted from the start.

Sounds like you have a decent grounding and a mature outlook on what you need and want to do. There is a bunch of gen in our recruit forum so go look in there...feel feel to ask questions that remain unanswered...bags of experience on here

If you have the adacemic qualifications, consider Engineering Officer / aircrew before the ground trades - better pay and pension and you will still be able to aim for the kind of things you're after - though perhaps less hands-on!

I considered it but my AFCO said that because my qualifications aren't in engineering I couldn't in this role. I also kinda want the more hands on experience too. Can always move up to officer in a couple years.

Thanks, already gained lots of insight snooping through here. I appreciate the support. :)

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a degree then you are more than qualified to be an officer (requires A levels?). You could do another Eng degree as part of your employment.
