I've got a question about the modern number plates. Everyone knows the format e.g SY59 TYG with the 59 identifying that the car was manufactured in the latter half of 2009. Well with the 10 plates now being sold I was wondering what will happen later in the year. They can't be replaced with 15 as that will be used for 2015. Anyone know how they will look? Will it be SY105 JFD?

no because that won't be out until 2060. The number plates are numbered in accordance with the year so any with 08 where made in the first half of 2008, any with 58 where in the second half. Any with 09 where made in the first half of 2009 and 59 in the second half. Well what i am trying to figure out is what will happen in the second half of this year.

I think they'll use 60 - cos it gives them 50 years to come up with another totally effed up system that they'll pay thousands of pounds for. Cynical? Moi?

You are either looking at purchasing a new car along with a comedy plate hence trying to work out possible combinations or you just have far too much time on your hands.....:PDT_Xtremez_19:

2009 plates were 09 & 59
2010 plates are 10 & 60
2011 plates will be 11 & 61

The first half of the year (March to Sept) is the year number, the second half (obv Sept to March) are the year number + 50. It'll keep going until 2050/51.

no because that won't be out until 2060.

So by your books, they've already f*cked themselves over for 2051 to 2059, but going to continue using this system in 2060?

Surely by 2060 any car that has been registered under that plate this year will be more than 50 years old and well and truely on the scrap heap by then:PDT_Xtremez_21:

Simple

Simple

In 2050 or 2051 all you do is move the Registration District to the back and the serial to the front.

Now AB 12 ABC

Then ABC 51 AB

Not really complicated is it.

You two need to lay off the drugs :PDT_Xtremez_31:

By 2050 cars will drive themselves and humans will be mere passengers. Cars will probably be state owned with us paying £100 a mile to use them.

You heard it here first :PDT_Xtremez_14:

You're off your rocker...by 2015 we'll all be getting around in monkey piloted hovercraft...

Yes they will go to 60, 61 etc. Even though this means that the system will only last for 50 years.
The previous system of putting the registration letter at the end, and then later at the front only lasted for 44 years. AS I, Z, and O weren't used, and Q, I think, was only issued to kit cars, but standing by to be corrected on that last point.
