Question to the Goaters, I have just completed my Aircrew aptitude tests and I got asked which branch of NCA I wanted to go. Can anyone enlighten me (If Opsec/Persec will allow) if it was EWs or crewmen or both on Nimrods and if anyone knows what it's likely to be on P8's?

P8's will have WSOp (EW) and (ACO) on them. Traditionally the EW guys operated the electronic support measures suite, Searchwater radar and radio suite. ACO's operated the acoustic suite and specialised in airborne photography (taking pictures of stuff as you whizzed by strapped into a seat with the window open).

EW or 'Dry men', because there was one more of them than ACO's, would use the spare guy to load ordanance in the form of sonarbouys...if the jet was 'hot' and tracking a contact the spare dry would also crack on in the galley as the wetties were glued to their screens.

If you like talking to people and seeing something on your screen you can nail down to something then choose dry...if you like trying to outguess the sub captain, making assumptions and throwing chicken bones for guidance on where the sub actually is then go wet...

I was the lead acoustics operator for many years. It's a great job and somewhat of a 'black art'. However, if you're looking forward to using your skills when you eventually leave, you should seriously look at the 'dry' job. There's a lot more in that job that's transferable to civvy organisations. As I say, being a 'wetty' was great but you don't find many submarines in the high street.
