Last night, (possibly with the help of alcohol, go figure...) I might accidentally have called called the DJ in my local pub a, "Boss eyed (True.), thick (Debatable.), uninformed (Again, debatable.), smarmy (Definitely!), Septic loving (Incontestable!), cnut (Move to strike your Honour, opinion.), who wouldn't know good music if it raised up and tattooed his eardrums with the musical notation of the opening lead guitar riff from "Dire Straits'" "Brothers in Arms," whilst simultaneously attempting to burst his spleen with an over-loud version of "Fairies Wear Boots," (Black Sabbath, Paranoid.)...The upshot of this is that, by accident, ( It was either that or fisticuffs, and, hell, I am a lover, not a fighter.)) I am to replace him next Saturday as the DJ...

Ladies and Gentlemen of The Goat. I need your help. I have a 6 (Six) hour gig to plan for, in 3 days time. I generally hate lists on The Goat (Unless they involve semi-naked women; natch.), but am prepared to abuse my SuperMod status (I WILL delete or combine multiple (or power posting type) posts) so that I can produce a completely NON AMERICAN (USA) set without repetitions...I need suggestions of good music, suitable for a "Rock/Sports Bar," that is relatively mainstream. As a bit of guidance I should mention that they have not even heard of "Stereophonics," and only have a passing knowledge of "Oasis" standards such as "Wonderwall," "Supersonic." etc...(Obviously the first person that mentions "James Blunt" will have his/her IP addy banned forever and a day, and be ridiculed for as long as I am able to stay on this mortal plane. The locals here know ALL about JB, and fncking hate him as much as the rest of the right thinking, God fearing world...)

Over to you guys, and thank you!

Here's a few more suggestions, obviously the list depends on the genre that goes down well in the bar.

The Jam
Iron Maiden
Pink Floyd (Another brick in the wall should be known by most)
Free/Bad Company
The Clash

or how about:

The Smiths
Stone Roses
Muse

a few to consider without even leaving the UK.

Going back a bit..

Slade
T-Rex
Bowie

Loads of 80s stuff depending on how camp you want to go..

Marc Almond (yikes)
Pet Shop Boys (yikes again)
Tears for Fears
Depeche Mode
More Bowie
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet

More recent..

Blur
Elbow
Kasabian
Editors
Muse

Surprised Penfold hasn't commented yet so will add more "music to slash your wrists by":

New Model Army
The Cure,
The Sisters of Mercy,
The Editors
Placebo
Adam and the Ants
Depeche Mode
Del Amitri
Hazel O'Connor
Marrilion

And for the Scot in the corner

The Proclaimers

P-F

(Big list all on my MP3 at the moment)

It's worth adding Blondie for 2 reasons...

1. Great tunes.
2. An excuse to post pictures of Debbie Harry like this...

Thanks for all your help lads and lasses. I have got a rough idea of what I am playing, opening with some "Sweet" (From the 70's!) moving on to some local stuff (to keep the locals happy), a bit of Pink Floyd and quietly slipping in some Motorhead, AC/DC, and Oasis. The big introduction to Lima of "Stereophonics" will happen about Half nine this evening (if I have my timings correct...) to be rapidly followed by a quick 30 minutes of English Punk! Sex Pistols etc... The quiet hour (roughly 10PM until 11PM will have some more local stuff and a bit of Australasian (Crowded House etc...) wrist slashing.

All in all I am pretty confident that I will get a good reception, but I know that if all else fails I can always resort to copious quantities of alcohol, and ignore the criticism...

Thanks for all your suggestions guys...The evening was a tremendous success, with even LittlePOB managing to get some action...

As a sideline competition I decided to play just the one song by an American group. A free t-shirt was on offer to anyone who could get the group and song title. Was I unfair by playing "Seasons in the Sun" by "Me First and The Gimme Gimmies?" No one got the shirt!

Had loads asking about "Stereophonics" and some other stuff that I came up with. I have been asked to do it all again, but have cried off for a while (Work!) but will be back there next month.

Trying to explain "I Bet that You Look Good On The Dance Floor" (Arctic Monkeys) was...Interesting!

For Next Month

The Jam
Franz Ferdinand
Lily Allen
Amy Winehouse
Nickleback
Girla Aloud
