In the current economic environment I would pause before pushing that PVR button, why make yourself unemployed when you dont have to.

Well there are loads of jobs out there in Civvy street ive been looking for a while now.

Depends what you are after. Believe me, it wasn't that straightforward when I left a few years ago and the jobs situation was a whole lot better then. I too, thought I wouldn't have too much trouble. Then I encountered Civvy Street with all its quirks. The biggest problem was getting past the closed shop. Despite companys advertising vacant positions, when I attended selection interviews, the decision was invariably already made and it was usually someone being selected from within the company - the jobs were externally advertised simply in order to comply with some government bureaucracy. It's bloody frustrating when you are told that you scored high/are an outstanding candidate and other bullsh!t and the only reason the company can give is that you lack experience in the commercial world. I learnt the "language", stuck at it and eventually got a decent job in an engineering company. There may well be "plenty" of jobs out there but don't be complacent about your chances - you could be disappointed.

I don't think people underestimate how difficult it is to get a job in civvy street, it's just that they are so pi**ed off with being in now. For many that where waiting for the redundancy offer to come made little difference on wether they wanted to be in or not. The 9 month redundancy bonus was the only thing many have been holding on for, and when that didn't materialise they PVR'd anyway. Good luck to them, and I mean that sincerely!!

Here's an oldie which I think is appropriate to this thread.

All the little birds friends were flying south for the winter. But he left it too late and on the way he got so cold that his wings froze up and he fell to the ground in a large field. Whilst he was lying there, a cow came by and sh@t on him. As the little bird lay there in the pile of cow sh1t, he began to realize how warm it was. The sh1t was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.

A passing cat heard the little bird singing, and came to investigate. The cat soon discovered the bird under the pile of cow sh1t, promptly dug him out, and ate him.

The morals of the story are:

1. Not everyone who sh1ts on you is your enemy.

2. Not everyone who gets you out of sh1t is your friend.

3. When you're in deep sh1t, but nice and warm, keep your mouth shut!

Gotta say guys, be careful out there. I have known a few guys expect to walk into a giood job because of experience and then fall foul of the internal thing. They then downsize and end up being told they are over qualified. Dont automatically assume that BAES will be a lifesaver, they are downsizing as well. Good luck if you have PVRd and remember, it has been worked out that to continue with the lifestyle you enjoy in the military, gym, medical, dental etc, you need to earn another 1/3rd of what you are on now!

Must be a pretty expensive Gym and Dentist etc plus the new pension scheme will also effect capitation rate. I think you need to wake up a smell the coffee if you love the RAF that much.

I'll wear the dental comment but not the rest. Medical is free at the point of need due to a new fangled system brought in called the NHS. When it comes to gyms then for only 2 out of the last 11 years have I been close enough to an RAF gym where the cost of petrol to get there didn't cost more than the local authority gym. RAF gyms tend to be much more dire places as well. The housing has been nice and cheap but the extra costs of insurance and the running costs of also trying to keep my own house rented have negated any savings. When I do eventually sell it then due to capital gains I will end up paying a few thousand more on top so any savings I did make made over the past 7 years in SFA will be swallowed in one go, and more.

That benefits calculator you are alluding to was created when retention was difficult and recruiting was worse. It's a crock of poo.

No truer word has ever been spoken on the goat.

it doesn't matter what trade you are, what 4mastaker has said really does apply to any and every job out there.

Just try to find a dentist (other than private) who will accept you on their list in civvy street. They're like rocking horse manure 'cos most have now gone private. Hope you have plenty of health cover.

Are you speaking from experiance? NHS Dentists are very easy to find in my area, in fact competition is that great many offer an evening service 6-8 to attract people who work (most of the private practises with very flashy treatments not available on NHS). Plus when I was in, I needed to travel to Shawbury (30 Miles) as the Army banned the RAF from the Unit Dentist due to arguements over funding issues.
Why would I need health cover? the NHS has served me well over the past two years. Unlike Medical Centers, I know who my Doctor as they do not depend on a conveyor belt of locums. Again, I needed to visit Cosford as the RAF boarding system is different to the Army.
How many medical centers offer an A&E or overnight stay. So I guess many Service personnel are in regular contact with NHS and I suspect they do not feel the need to take out private cover for these type of circumstances.

Not everything is as bad as portrayed in the press or ask your own family how they fair? Yes NHS cover could be better but don't jump to conclussions.

What part of the country are you in?

In South Yorkshire the number of dentists that take new NHS patients are very few and far between.

NHS dentists are about, it can still cost! £50 ish for a filling, £15 for check up and polish at our NHS dentist. A crown is £250 but lots more if you go to a private specialist!I left in 96, made sure I was dentally fit on leaving and have luckily only had a couple of jobs done other than routine checks.Local doctors are fine but you you can choose where you go. Our local surgery is good but busy, can take a while to get a routine appointment, luckily my health is good. Also looking for early release ( Iam now an MOD employee!) Hoping to go next year. There's 25,000 civvy posts to go.Early retirement will do for me!!

Evrybody is a little bit right

Evrybody is a little bit right

Stax, I believe the 1/3 extra pay came about taking into account if you were in quarters and then bought your own home when you left! Yes there are NHS Dentists available in some areas (dependant on where you live), and they do cost money for different treatments so never free, Doctors are free (except prescription charges) and even in Civvi street you don't always see the same Doc, 4 different in last 4 visits for me and finally onto gym, to moan that you had to drive to the RAF gym which was free, unfortunate as normally you live near the Station the gym is at unless you are in your own home already in which case you are in the 1/3 margin already. I have to drive to my civvi gym to and am very fortunate that I found one for £25 a month, as Witney Lakes (which is closer to my home and has decent weight room) cost approx £500+ a year membership and then approx£75+ a month, would much prefer the free RAF Gym.

Altenatively I don't do Guard, I don't do Det's and you can occasionaly tell your Seniors are dicks without extra duties so ecery cloud eh!!!

I've been out a few years now...but jobs are certainly not easy to get, and very rare to get one paying the same sort of salary that the RAF does. The big things, as has been said, is that the jobs are advertised but normally already filled. Be prepared to send out hundreds of applications and CV's...you'll be lucky to get one or two replies.
I've got 24 years of warehousing/stacking experience..but no "commercial/retail" experience, which is what they nearly always require. I'm lucky, at the moment, in that I have a good paying job but it's certainly not fulfilling. It could be worse though, so I am thankful. I only left the RAF environment a few months back, so could see the standards and I needed to get away as a lot of people couldn't even manage the most basic of trade skills needed...but they could text blindfolded, you won't get away with that in civvy street.
I'm in the midst of dental treatment. The NHS dental charges are £17 (lower band) for a checkup (and they normally last 2 minutes) going up to £205 (higher band) that covers most things i.e crown, dentures etc (which is what I'm having to have done).
Doctors are hit and miss where I am, but treatment is far,far better than in the RAF (in my experience anyway).
You may have some gripes with the way things are going in the RAF, but it's not all rosy on the outside. I'd still be in (I think) if the RAF medical services hadn't totally screwed up, but I'd just warn any Stacker types not to expect the same salary etc for the same type of job (generally). Your military experience counts for f**k all when it's a case of finances...Batosz Jakubiec will do the same or more than you but for a lot less, and I know that because I worked with him!!!
As RedundancyPlease posted, no, I don't do guard or dets...but I do pay a market rent and full council tax. I do have to take unpaid time off for dental/doctors appointments. I don't have a lunch HOUR, I don't have 2 half hour tea breaks, I certainly don't get time off midweek to play sports. I also have to work with idiotic management who haven't got a clue what's going on (that's the law, whether in or out of the RAF), but if I f**k up, I don't get moved sections, I lose my job. And just to make me happy, I have to drive 25 miles each way for the privelege (without home to duty!!).

The grass isn't always greener....but I do wish anyone leaving the best of luck.

And quite a few of those are people who cant be bothered to look for a Job.I am not expecting everything to be rosey on the outside but i expect to be in some sort of job be it driving to even sweeping roads until something comes along. Ive done 12 years in the mob and for me the last 3 years have been the longest in my career so far so anything has got to be better than what im doing at the moment.I am lucky that my wife has a good paid job so anything i can get will be a added bonus. I dont expect to live the life ive had while i have been in and i expect a lot of things to change and life to become harder for a while but things will come together and ill be happy again.I am quite lucky in the fact that i did 2 years in the Army then got medicaly discharged so i worked in civvy street before i joined the RAF and i have done many types of jobs be it being a dustman to working on a farm picking eggs for tesco's.
