So I'm going OOA for six months soon and I'm in contracts with Sky, Vodafone, Tesco car insurance etc.

I don't need any of them, are they likely to hold me to the contract even if I tell them why I'm going away?

If you ring sky and tesco mobile and explain why you are going away for six months ie in the forces they may drop you to a lower/minimum tarrif for that period (they did for me). As for the car insurance why dont you cancel it and declare your car SORN ?

Last year for my trip down south I managed (after much aggravation) to get myself put onto a 'holding tariff' with T-Mobile. They basically froze my contract for the 4 months and added it to the end of the original contract.

For my 2 cars I simply parked them up on my drive and declared them SORN, then cancelled the insurance.

For your TV I'm not sure as my Fiancée at the time still required it but you never know your luck. Threaten to leave them maybe the moment you can if they don't play ball?

Don't ask you don't get, just don't go in all guns blazing. I got me phone and sky to let me off the hook. However I kept the car insurance as I was unwilling to take the chance of anything happening to it, but the company did give me a reduced rate as I would not be driving it for 4 months.

Orange froze my mobile contract as soon as I mentioned OOA, 4 months added to the end which is actually better for me as that now lines up with the missus' contract so I can haggle a bit harder:PDT_Xtremez_19:

Don't forget to ask about a council tax rebate too. Our adminers told me about that on my return from OOA

I tried that one but was told I can only claim if I live in a quarter (Lincs County Council)

If you don't get anything from you'd council then, for some theatres, you mcan claim back a rebate of 80p per day from JPA via PSF. Those in private accomodation need to provide proof that they haven't had the rebate from their council.

Don't have access to t'intranet here; however, I'm sure someone could dig out the reference.

Cheers for the info. Am moving from my rental house back into the mess before I go, so gonna tell Sky there's no way I can continue to be a customer of theirs and that I WILL come back when I get back (someone I've spoken to did that last year and had their contract canxd early without charges).

Have also spoken to Vodafone now, they will refund my rental when I get back on two conditions. 1. The phone is not used when I am away, and 2. I get a letter from work detailing my deployment dates.

Ref the car insurance, I've never actually cancelled car insurance before, so wasn't sure I could just cancel without having to still pay (as it's a contract).

Thankfully the lease on the house is due to end the month I go, which is a bonus because it's a fixed term lease, so if I left one month in they'd be able to make me pay the full six months.

Council tax will be a pittance as I'll be living in, so not too bothered about that.

Thankfully I never got around to getting a TV licence for the house, because I know what those ****s are like with refunds.

Thanks again.

Just be really careful about your car insurance. Fair enough if it's off the road, then you could declare it SORN and get a tax refund. However I once had a lad visit me to see what the RAF was going to do about his car getting damaged in a storm. He'd gone OOA and had cancelled his insurance. His car was off the road but not insured. It was quite badly damaged in a storm and he had no insurance. The RAF certainly wasn't to blame so he had to pay for the repairs himself.

For those that are affected details on MOD payment of Council Tax Rebate are in JSP 754 Chapter 9 Section 11 - available on the intranet.

Ta :PDT_Xtremez_19:

But this is applicable only to SFA personnel, boo!

I was sure I was eligable to a Council Tax reduction whilst OOA (own home) but have hit a brick wall with the LCC.

No you can use this if you are in private accomodation. Forum rules preclude me from posting extracts as it is an intranet document. However, para 09.111 gives details on how personnel in private accommodation can claim.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for keeping up with this for me.

I saw that but above it in 09.1103 under eligibility it makes no mention of Private Accomodation and as the higher para thought 09.1111 could be a typo.

Your thoughts?

Mine is that as per usual for a JSP it ties itself in knots and is open to 'interpretation'

Update

My OOA admin staff 'assure' me that on my return to my unit my HR staff will activate my entitlement on production of proof my CC haven't already refunded me.

Hmm...

I hope that it all works out well. I think that it's only 80p a day but it all adds up.
