I'm just trying to figure out what the average pay is for an LAC on a 4 month tour overseas, can anyone shed any light??

Hi mate, looked on www.rafcom.co.uk for you and got this.

I also assume you will qualify for the Op Allowance too, it's around £1500 I think (I'm pretty sure its a daily rate).

Our system may work differently to yours, being volunteer (auxillary). Best off speaking to your local unit and seeing what they say.

Sorry can't be more help.

Just thought as the subject of Op Allowance has been mentioned I would take this opportunity to pose a question that maybe somebody could answer. I have raised this issue with both the administration department in theatre and with higher echelons with no definitive response so far.

Whilst on an Operational Deployment JPA obviously has visibility of the occurrence as home to duty ceases and LSSA commences, why is it then that Operational Allowance is not paid whilst on that deployment? It can also take up to a couple of months post deployment to be received.

As an Auggie (deduced from the forum you're posting in!), there are rules for enhancing pay to the level of your day job - which (after the Telic mobilisation lessons were learned) limits increased a lot. So you should never get less than you do in real life.

When mobilised, you join the RAF for the duration, and should get the equivalent regular pay scales, including X factor etc, if you earn less in the day job.

One tip - if you're in a company pension scheme, make sure any contributions for that are deducted from your RAF pay - if paid later, you don't get to pay them as non-taxable.

Eh up mate

I'm an Auggie WO and in a similar boat yet again, but only for 2 months this time.
You unit admin should have gone or will go through all that with you.
A quick answer is you'll get whatever the annual rate for the rank/Trade Group/Pay Band for the full four months plus the X Factor, plus whatever you can claim.

Our Chief Clk lays it all out in plain simple speak. This includes pay, whether or not you can claim for financial grant to make up your RAF pay to the same as your day job, whatelse you can claim etc.

On top of that you should get call up gratuity, (about £450 tax free), LSSA if youv'e been away a lot, Op gratuity, PODL, et al. The list is endless.

As someone has already said, get your works pension sorted before your call up to avoid tax. My employer has done a great job on this and the RAF are paying the employers contribution in to my scheme.

Hope this helps

The simple answer is that it's in the rules, the Method of Payment for Op Allowance is as a lump sum at the end of the deployment and is a Unit HR function. Why is a question for our lords and masters. The reason it takes a few months is when you arrive and Unit HR put it on the system it won't get picked up until the next pay run, so it depends when you return to the UK and what the workload is on your PSF.
