Does anyone know where I can find clarification on paying compliments whilst wearing a desert hat? I would like to see something written down before I get caught in a nasty salute or not situation wth some American general and have to argue the toss.

Many thanks.

if your in a scary desert, then no saluting, if your in the holiday camp just give officers a damn good ignoring!

The rules about paying compliments are written in the SSOs/ SROs for each place and you should get briefed after you go through OPLOC or on the induction brief, or failing that go ask the SWO or RSM.

Saluting? any officer worth his salt goes out of his way not to salute an enlisted mad like yourself. I've been known to chase after officers to get a salute, just to p1ss them off, especially if they're carrying things that could be dropped.

it's THE hat!

it's THE hat!

FOMz MR hat is frowned upon here cos he is too small and nails hard after the real war. JO SWO wants issue hats a million miles wide worn to make us look even more stupid grrrrrrrrr

Remember that Canadian from the real desert place that had his brim uber widened? because their equivilent of the SWO had a pout on about them trimming their hats.

I suggest you go in that direction mate, get your brim made as wide a sombrero's and see what he says.

sounds like he's got too much time on his hands to me.

It always used to be , floppy hat - no salute but if they insist it can be be done in a "feck of manner", just salute with middle finger.....They will understand !

Crack on.........................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Of course you should pay compliments when wearing a desert hat. if a bird with nice chebs walks by you are still permitted, nay obliged to compliment her :PDT_Xtremez_19:

I don't want to get too ILLBW here, but the desert hat is designed to keep the sun off you. If you don't like the look of it when it's serviceable then put your feret on.

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah! I would like to see something blah blah down before I get caught in a nasty blah blah blah situation with some American general and have to blah blah toss myself off.

Many thanks.

Just thought I'd help out and amend your post to what you actually meant.

Have fun on your hols mate. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

And about the hat thing, I haven't got a scooby myself, hope this helps.

Thanks for that Rojaws................. helpful as ever.

Gimp, just do what I do mate.

If you're in an operational enviroment then I wouldn't salute... If a rodney asks why just point out that a sniper could be watching and your salute identifies him / her as an important target.

You have in effect saved their lives, and they should be buying you beer till it comes out of your ears!

One reason I used to salute at ever opportunity in theatre.....they love it AND a great chance of them getting topped.......good job for everyone..........Crack on.............................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

well a certain cack hole that several of us has been to was no saluting, although i have heard it has changed and compliments must be paid. I think it has something to do with lots of people turning up from the otherside of the pond

You'll be informed in theatre what the requirement is. If not, assume that the combat headress is the same as your No.1/2 dress, i.e.Salute.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, don't you have to have a cap badge on your headgear to salute? Back in 19canteen when I was on a rapier squadron, the 2IC told some tale, from even longer ago, about a squadron where the CO made all the troops put a cap badge on their cap comforters (who remembers them eh?!!) so they had to salute. But I'd better not say too much, because somebody who's reading this might get a jolly good idea, & then you'll all end up with cap badges embroidered on your floppy hats or have you got them already?

I thought a salute was in acknowledgement of the officer holding the queen's commission.

AFAIK the Yanks do not hold our queen's commission, so the most they get from me is a high 5.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Surely its in the field?? no saluting i'd say?:PDT_Xtremez_19:

...Doesn’t one doff ones lid...and say something like "lovely whether...turned out nice again"?
