Hi, I was recommended e-Goat as I'm trying to find out information about my Mum.

2024222 SGT R AMEY WAAF

I successfully applied for, and received, her War Medal this year. I have also received her record. Even the person sending me the information apologised because there wasn't much there. It consisted of 8 lines, Start, Finish, 3 For a stay in Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, leaving 3 more lines of nothing really.

Here is what I know:

Ruth Von-Kanel, 19 year old Swiss, came to England, with her Sister, to learn English. She married my Father and thus became Ruth Amey. During her time as Von-Kanel she was registered as an Alien. Her alien Order Number was - 729509.

She joined the WAAF as a Linguist and worked on the South Coast. Her role was to listen in to the Luftwaffe. When three Stations had sent in a direction reading they had pinpointed the Luftwaffe Planes. They continued to talk to the Pilots, pretending to be their Ground Control, feeding wrong information and causing the airplanes to run out of fuel and crash.

Because of the lack of information in her record I don't know where to turn and was recommended this site.

if anyone out there can help I really would appreciate it.

Regards - Phil

Bletchley Park

Have you tried contacting Bletchley Park?

Not directly but I have searched their on-line database.

Funnily enough my Mum did visit Scotland from September to November 1939 but I contacted the place she was at and they have no records. The place she stayed at was Craufurdland Castle, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, KA3 6BS

Thanks - Phil

One more thing.

when I was 16 I joined the G.P.O. And our Training Centre was at Bletchley Park. I went there 3 times as an an Apprentice and I do think that Mum would have said something. I know that they were sworn to secrecy but I just feel that she would have mentioned it.

On the other hand I would also like to think that she did work at Bletchley Park and that she did keep it's secret and took it to her grave.

Kind Regards - Phil

Bit of a long shot this one - you mention a stay in the Sussex County Hospital, that's in Brighton so sort of implies she was based locally at the time. If you have any information about where or her unit etc then you could try the East Sussex County archives? They are closed at the moment while they move into larger newer premises but their catalogue is available on-line. There may be something there that would help? If she was actually in Brighton then there is also a very good local history website called My Brighton and Hove which has a very helpful user community - someone there may recognise a unit name or location if you have them?

We are from Lewes, East Sussex. However, alas, I don't know her unit or where she was actually based. But I will certainly look at the archive options you have given.

Cheers - Phil

Ah right - the County archives have moved away from you then!! They were up by the castle but are now out at Falmer by the Albion ground and the Uni!
