does anyone know how they are supposed to work, is it simply a matter of longest in post for that rank gets their chosen post? Or do other things such as Q's and previous postings come into it? and if so how much weighting is given to these?
I've asked at work but know everyone seems to have a different opinion, and my drafter couldn't be anymore vague if he tried. Anyone been a drafter any on here? any gen?

Black Art of Drafting

Black Art of Drafting

You'll get no more than vagueness here.

So many variables, last tours, repatriations, promotion postings, people PVRing, establishment variations, things that are expected to happen then don't, things that are not expected then happen, young lads failing their phase 2, preferential treatment, sickness, medical discharge, operational priorities, deaths and then there's service need.

This is probably not the full list, however, I don't think you'll get one of TG 17s elite on here explaining themselves.

Busby has just about covered it really. There are so many things that can affect vacancies that are out of the control of the drafter - this may explain why he/she was vague. LIL (Frequently referred to wrongly as Longest in Post) should only ever be used as a last resort, when there is no other way to fill the vacancy. I would make contact with your desk again and perhaps ask some more specific questions. Without knowing more, it is difficult to help.

well i'm a techie (ATechM), looking to go first line i've done 5 years 2nd line, but i don't seem to be any closer to moving. I keep being told hang on in there, we'll post you post you in 12 months, say to conz, that was 6 mnths ago, now i'm looking at 12-18 mnths to go there, i've given them other plenty of other options but that hasn't really helped.

What are they looking for if longest in post is last resort, they gave the impression it was the be all and end all.

If you don't care where you go then ask the desk which places they are struggling to fill. If you want to go somewhere that is really popular then you may have to wait some time. I'm guessing that Q's may play a part in their decision, but I never drafted technical trades.

i've got one negative, he said the only option is your negative choice in 6-7 months time. All other units nothing in the foreseable future. Seems strange to me.

They are also operating slightly differently at the moment because of the severe shortages of techie manpower, I think it's called the placement plan which is probably not helping your cause.

I'll agree with that.
When I got posted last year they first of all offered my negative camp and negative job choice. When I politely declined they posted me back to where I had previously environmentalled out of.
Good luck, but I wouldnt get your hopes up unless you're after Lossie, Marham, Odiham or Benson.

thanks tommo and the rest, so it is a bit more complicated than i thought . what's the placement plan? i think i've read about it but can't really remember what it is, keep everyone in their post or is that me being cynical:PDT_Xtremez_30:

any techie drafters out there, come on let us know what are you looking for.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

The placement plan looks at manning figures across 1st line and in particular at the harmony guidlines and whether they are being breached. Supposedly the manpower priority will be then be highlighted and sent to where it is urgently needed.............as Wobbly will probably tell you that in reality it isnt!

where are the sac's that are getting posted to then, i wonder why the drafters don't say this when you talk to them, about all the variables in posting rather than simple 'time in post', and the effects of the manpower placement plan for techies? Think open door should be renamed semi-closed door.

It will be closed before long to Cpls and below depending where you are, some places have already started this.
You'll have to go through your Chief Clerk when dealing with your trade desk.
The Placement Plan is in the Chief Clerk Bulletins, accessible on the ACOS Manning site and on some units its on your PSF/HR website.
A look at that might give you an indication of where the manpower is needed.

i'm on one of the trial units, but it's gone back to open door, don't know for how much longer, i'd better get in quick then :PDT_Xtremez_09:
