Promotion board affect overseas posting

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Please explain further, do you mean will you be turned down for an overseas tour because you may come off the board?

Husband has applied, there is another cpl applied who has been in longer, but he may come off the board in April! In theory we don't stand a chance against him, but do they look at promotion potential. Seems silly to post him and his family to Cyprus when he could be back soon or not even go due to promotion?!?!

I may just be clutching at straws!! Lol!!

Closing date was Friday, I hate the waiting!!!

Suppose it depends on the Trade Group he's in, what Unit / post he was applying for, when the post needs filling by and when the board sits / how many they need off the board, amongst other things.

As a general rule, the Manning desk should take potential promotions into account in order to minimise disturbance etc. Doesn't mean that they will. Also, if there's a SNCO post that could be filled by the same individual in the same location (in this case, Cyprus rather than a particular base over there) then he could be bumped from the JNCO list to the SNCO list, in theory, which would leave the other slot open for your hubby. But it's all just theory. There's a lot that goes on behind closed doors at Castle Manning...

From my limited experience they can't take the promotion board into account if it hasn't sat and the other guy hasn't even been boarded. Generally it will come down to other factors like when was the last time either of them served overseas (not 4 or 6 monthers though) and whether you already have q's and Security clearances if required.

The post to Cyprus is may and the board sits in April!! I guess it's just wait and hear, and if we don't get it hope that we were second on the list, so when he goes out for a couple of months and finds out he's promoted we can go!!

The only thing standing them apart is he's served longer than my husband and he may come off the board.

Thanks for you help, on what is the overseas posting lottery!! :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Taking on a posting overseas can involve a LOT of prep, and if you do end up going I'd strongly advise AGAINST waiving your 90 days notice to move if you can at all help it - pets, passports, paperwork, housing, vehicles (this side and that side), kids schooling, the list goes on and it can get pretty expensive! And trying to organise some of the stuff on the other side is next to impossible to do in 3 or 4 weeks, you really will need 90 days and you'll spend half of that trying to get admin sorted at the Cyprus end.

I would imagine that, if there are only 2 on the list to go and the other lad gets picked up, your hubby would be asked to waive his 90 days to move in order to meet the May deadline. Like I said, I'd advise against that, especially as it sounds like the timing for this particular posting doesn't fall really well for the Trade. Another consideration is clearance levels for your hubby - again, this depends on which unit you've applied for.

With all that said, time served means very little to the promotions boards these days (unfortunately). If your other half has served 3 years in rank then he's probably got just as much chance on the board as the other guy!

Yes it is certainly a consideration the CM looks at when considering an overseas assignment. If they can foresee a vacancy in the next rank coming up then the individual may still be considered however if the likelihood is that they will be released to the board and there are no overseas vacancies at the next rank then then can be overlooked.

But the board hasn't sat yet! It doesn't until April, and the posting date is May. Surely the manner won't try and second guess the prom board? Sounds like the best man will get the overseas move with 90 days notice in the next couple of weeks. The point, I think is will the drafter pull the carpet from under him if with 4 weeks to go to posting he comes within the promotion quota?

I think you're all missing the point...it's generally down to if you've played footy/rugby/golf et al with the deskie some time in your past...

You're talking to the wrong end of the payscale I think Vim. Us lowly minions never get to meet our deskie (cos half of us would probably throttle him). Best we can hope for is driving range with the boss or caddying for the Station commander!

I would never second guess a prom board, been surprised too many times! If this chap was to be selected for the assignment and subsequently come off the board the first thing they would look at would be if there were any vacancies in the next rank coming up he could be moved into. Beyond that the SP could defer the promotion until he returns from overseas once he has got there dependant on what was is important to him, the overseas lifestyle or the seniority.

Other considerations could be vacancies in the same rank coming up later in the year. They may choose to overlook the SP due to his apparent competitiveness on the board and offer him the next vacancy should he be unsuccessful on the prom board.

So it's still wait and see! And we're all still waiting hopefully find out this week!! Will up date you all when we know!!

I hate waiting!!!!

At 3pm today my husband called to tell me we were posted to Cyprus!!!!

By 4pm it was all changed because Manning had messed up and now we are not going, it's the guy who may come off the board in April.

Hey ho!! For an hour I thought we were going to he escaping for to the sunshine!!

Thanks for all your comments. The final answer is it doesn't make a difference, and never be too excited by what's offered as someone is having a bad day and messing you about!!!

Don't take anything as gospel, including emails, until that Assignment Order arrives on JPA.
