Ok Goaters I am in need of some help. With the Army pulling out of Germany the old offices are being cleared out. In one of them is a box load of what we now know to be Elephant Drives from some sort of server that is Pre Land CSSR (circa 80's). Now due to certain instances we have had to classify these drives as above restricted and I am now in need of advice in how to destroy them or who to contact them as to get them destroyed. The devices them selves are very large and heavy. The info is not stored on hard drives but what appear to be very very large CD's made from either aluminium or steel and as such I cann't put them into my disk shredder. Plus the units themselves are sealed up, guessing they are fire/water proof. Have any of the goaters out there ever used them in your travels or if any of the TG4 bods out there deal with destruction of IT equipment if you can drop me a PM I would be very greatful.

You could try marking them as fragile and sending them through stores back to the UK. By the time the stackers, drivers and possibly movers, if you can get them flown, have finished with them they should be unrecognisable.

ISS / DIST are offering a HDD destruction services for devices that DII replaced.A order is placed on a 1/4'ly basis with a suitable partner.

Your ISS Rep should be able to assist.

In Cyprus we used to have a machine that would smash and grind HD Platters into little bits, well we did until J2 put a HD Enclosure in and mashed up the blades, too expensive to repair so I doubt there are too many around.

Hard drive platters tend to be metallic coated glass these days so destruction is a peice of **** once you get into it.

Speak to the (shudder) RAFP about it.
Haven't got any. The police station here closed and the RMP moved to Elmpt but even so they are only GPD, haven't got a clue about IT destruction.
I agree get it down the range and shoot the sh#t out of it
Unfortunately not a viable option as to heavy weapon range anywhere near here and the EOD troop have disbanded.I'm awaiting a phone back from Northwood to see what they say about it.

Discs

Discs

IIRC these were aluminium discs with a brown magnetic coating, so open the case and run a fairly powerful magnet over the surface.
That will effectivly wipe the data and make it unreadable.

Just place them in the control of your nearest Wing commander and send him on a trip somewhere. I am sure that within two days they'll be in the hands of the correct people. Obviously after being found left on a train and passed through the Sun newsroom first.

If you treat the diskpacks the same as a Hard-Drive and enquire of your RAF Police ITSyO if the the station has a contact for secure destruction. We had RL02 and RA60 type diskpacks we needed to destroy at a unit I worked at and you could if you knew how to dismantle them and then degauss the platter inside. Without knowing what type of diskpacks they are I would recommend they go to a properly accredited company who will melt them down and return your Destruction Certificate all nice and legal - iaw JSP440.

After doing some investigation found out that because the equipment is so old there is no contract in place to destroy them. 1 MI Bn wanted nothing to do with it as it isn't their equipment and as we now no longer have a permanent RMP presence on camp and SIB have gone back to the UK it is all being sent back to PJHQ for them to deal with. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Have you got a MOD ICS catalogue account, as there is a company that will come to you and do it, I cannot remember the details and I'm not back in work until Tuesday to find out.

I'm not sure if there's anyone left in my old team from the diskpack days, but if you contact the ACCS Support Flight at ASACS Force Command HQ (Boulmer) they may be able to give you the details of the firm they have used for secure destruction.
