Qualified ODP

Hello, I'm a qualified ODP hoping to join next time the trade is open. Only information on the careers website seems to be aimed at trainees. I just wanted to know the starting salary for an RAF ODP? I'm not money minded it just has to at least match my current salary to make it viable.

Hope someone can help

Bit of a specialised area but hopefully someone will pop up with answers for you. If you use the search facility you will find there are some previous threads which might help.

One post mentions quick promotion, but with a ceiling at Sgt level.

I assume you saw this on the MOD Careers website, hence your question ...

If you’re an experienced Operating Department Practitioner with the appropriate qualifications, you’ll start your professional work significantly higher in the RAF’s rank and pay structure.

All the best.

Yeah I saw that. My worry is it says 18k after 1 year. I am newly qualified and on a salary of around 21k so higher than they appear to be offering. So I'm just not sure where I fit into that statement. To be honest as long as it matches I am happy. I did a search but posts are quite old.

Thank you though and fingers crossed someone will know.

I think I have figured it out. Are ODP's higher pay band and will I be an SAC T on entry? I know for sure it is cpl after year and fairly sure it is higher payband until FS.

ODP pay

ODP pay

Having done some research it seems that;

Newly qualified ODP's get SAC(T) on qualification with an incremental raise each year, as well as the annual pay rise (once its not frozen that is!)
High pay band until FS rank
Timed promotion to Sgt then on selection by a selection board
Its normally 3 years to Cpl, then 4yrs to Sgt, you have to get recommended each year in your SJAR (annual appraisals)

Hope this helps.

That sounds similar to the career progression for nurses. It is a source of some real irritation to many airmen / women that promotion is so fast for those with certain professional qualifications. You can understand that when others in some trades flog away for years as an SAC before getting a sniff at their stripes.
In my day (long time ago!) An experienced SRN coming in went through basic training, came out as a J/T and after six months became Corporal Tech. If they performed alright then Senior Technician was theirs at three years, after that - stasis.
Recently, on ARRSE, there was a thread about an HCA being commissioned!

The one thing that gets me with the 'equivalent to civvy wages' thing (and this isn't really a pop at the OP as he's asked a valid question, it's just something I've heard a fair few times in my time in) , is that surely the living costs of someone in the mob is lower than someone doing the same job in civvyland?.

I'm thinking of stuff like living in the block/mess with no mortgage or full-fat rent, lower food costs, free dental/med and gym membership. Not only that but free clothes and shoes...SHOES! :pDT_Xtremez_30:

Like I said, not having a pop. Just curious really.

I pretty much know all the RAF ODP's - certainly the one's at the rank of Sgt and above (i.e. they've been around a fair while) and can confirm what previous people have written. If you are qualified on entry to the Service, the rank of SAC(T) is held for 3 years, then providing appropriate recommendations are there it is 4 years as a Cpl, then Sgt (once again, with supporting SJAR's). FS and beyond on merit/selection only.

All ranks up to and including Sgt are High payband. Current pay rates on RAF Community website.

I do not believe there is a mechanism whereby an individual can start mid-level on a ranks increment scale, such as if an individual joins the Service with 3 or 4 years post-qualification experience.
