RAF Carbon Neutral

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Seems we are going to try and be a carbon neutral fighting force by 2040. Well according to a speech given by the head honch The Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston.

"We are aiming for our first NetZero airbase by 2025, a NetZero estate by 2030, and a Carbon Net Balanced Service by 2040."

It doesn't mean that you won't be able to do things the old fashioned way with coal, oil and Avtur... it just means that you have to do something that makes up for it and try to reduce what you are creating.

For example, some of the big Oil and Gas companies are now buying wind farms or investing in tidal power... it doesn't mean that they'll stop digging dead dinosaurs out of the ground. All it means is that if they create X amount of carbon, they have to offset the same amount by planting trees or wind turbines.

So the MOD could easily offset carbon production by covering disused airfields in solar panels (Lyneham for example) and reducing the amount of carbon we generate (more time in Simulators for pilots, electric vehicles on station that are recharged with electricity gathered from solar panels on the barrack blocks).

Knowing the RAF though, they'll claim some offset by pointing to all of the RAF veterans currently working in the renewables sector.

Which, in your view, will be the first station to be crowned a NetZero airbase and all by 2025. MT white fleet of Tesla's?

As long as the Tesla server is running to allow you access to the car it should be ok?!!! When technology goes mad.....

As for the Carbon Zero nonsense...we going to stop firing missiles and firing bullets in order to save the environment during a war?? Reminds me of Frost in Aliens..."What are we supposed to use? Harsh language?"!!!

More B5 rhetoric from the upper echelons taking away from the real problems such as personnel stretch and low morale while maintaining a large number of pointless Officers, who could be disestablished and the money saved here invested into the SNCO and Junior Ranks with extra coal-face numbers!!

The problems of stretch and retention are a completely different subject to "Carbon Neutral".

I think that whether we reach Carbon Neutral or not, the Airships will think everything is peachy and the lads love being in the RAF... whilst raising sign off periods to 18 months and wondering why no one signs on for extra service.

RAF - 2030 version. An added advantage is that all the technicians can be sacked and replaced by a handful of people who are good at origami.

Obviously a new 3* position and staff will be appointed to head the project!!!!!
Oh for sure a whole new fully staffed department will be needed for this one. AOC's Team award for services to the planet almost certainly in the post 6 months after start up.

My guess for first station to achieve the carbon neutral status - COSFORD - No avtur burning machines there, comparatively small footprint, minuscule MT section, plenty of hangar roof space for lots of panels, lots of marching/walking rather than driving around the unit. (You heard it here first)

Not been to Cosford recently but when we were there they ran Jags (JPs before that) most days on the ground for airfield handling training and we were bussed everywhere as it was deemed too dangerous to walk across to the airfield site. You are thinking far to big, somewhere like Digby would be a more obvious choice.

I don't think Digby is an HQ Air unit anymore. My guess would be Halton...

(Off topic) No JP's or Jags are used for marshaling training these days they were binned a long time ago. Classroom lessons, interactive screens type stuff these days. (Off topic)
