I am really sorry for what probably looks like a stupid question, but i want to ask it anyway, never know I may be surprised.

Anyway I'm well on my way in the application process, looking to go in as AMM(m) as long as I pass prtc and my final interview.

With this trade would you be involved in much fighting whilst being on tour?, If not, is there a way of being trained for both the AMM and like a more reg job.

I know many of you will probably be thinking, why didn't you join RAF reg or the army, but I want to get a trade as an AMM.

Thanks

Seriously mate if you want to be out on the ground getting shot at and fighting then you should join the Marines or the Army even in the RAF Regt (not taking away from them what they do) are only here to protect out airfields they are not out on the ground reclaiming land etc etc fighting the taliban as such.

Your best bet, once you complete your training, is to try to get a tour with the Support Helicopter Force - that's about as close as you'll come to anything like that. Even then your prime job will be to keep aircraft in the air, all else (despite what they keep trying to sell us) is secondary. I would venture that as groundcrew if you have to get out on the ground with your rifle putting down rounds into the enemy then we are deeply, deeply in the sh*t.

You can volunteer to do certain jobs. There is a lad on my shift who is a Cpl rigger(ATM) who is currently in Afghanisn in Lashka Gar, working with the army. He did 3 months training with the army and is now on a 6 months det. I'm not exactly sure what his role is, but I know it is along the lines of gaining info about the taliban, identifing individuals who they want to speak to and the organising ops to go and get the people they want. He then goes out with a load of army blokes, and snatch the suspected taliban. He sent me a message on facebbook today and has seen loads of action, and gets to shoot at people almost daily.

So there are oportunities to do things like this, but to be honest all of us on shift think he must be a bit mental to volunteer for it, and we had a wake for him before he left, as a going away do.
