Does anyone know if you can be an Airman Aircraft Handler? I know you can in the Navy but didnt know if you could be one under the RAF?

What about movers?

I have never seen a Mover hook up a Tug and tow an Aircraft into a HAS or across the airfield for an engine run. Have you?

If you mean the few movers in certain posts who are qualified to marshall certain aircraft types, that is not really aircraft handling is it?

You need to be an aircraft tradesman ie a person trained to work on the aircraft itself not just someone who is trained to work around an aircraft operating environment. I believe that the lowest entry level is aircraft maintenance mechanic (FLM by any other name). Having said all that I am willing to be corrected by someone who knows better.

It harps on a lot about fixing the jets but your first tour will be as an AMM which is general handling and servicing of aircraft which I believe the Navy call Handler. I could be wrong and I'm sure some of the Harrier guys know more as they work with our bell bottom trousered colleagues.

"Chockheads" as they are affectionately known in the Navy are a separate trade to AETs (aircraft engineering technicians).

AETs perform aircraft handling on JFH, because we don't employ chockheads. On a rotary Naval squadron? I have no idea.

Back in those days of yore when a LAC was a demi god wasn't there a rank of Aircraft Handler (ACH) which was about the equivalent of a labourer. I think it was a WW2 position.

Well no....but I don't have much contact with aircraft being an ICT Tech.

Power sets and batt master in normal training as I recall, then ramps and doors for certain types - just so the movers can work the plane whilst the crew get their baby sleep. Cannot recally seeing anyone ever tow or otherwise start anything.

As a Mover, I'm part of the only RAF trade allowed to work as a Landing Point Commander at the newly amalgamated Joint Helicopter Support Squadron. This means I'm also qualified in Helicopter Handling as per my LPC training. The Mover Cpls on the Unit are Helicopter Handling Instructors so they can actually teach this aspect as well. I think this is what techie_tubby was getting at.

As far as hooking up Tugs to Tristars at Brize, the powers that be will never allow a Mover to come anywhere near! That's down to the Techies doing the hooking up and the civvies driving the Tugs.
