RAF Reg. and IED's

Firstly apologies for putting this in the introduction forum, and if the question is woeful carry the apology on to that.

The question I would like to ask is this;

Are the RAF Regiment capable of disposing of IED’s themselves or do they have to call in explosive experts from the RAF or the Army. I found information Ordinance specialists in the RAF but there was no specific connection to the Regiment. It just seemed that as defensive unit that had to dominate the ground these would be useful skills.

If it is not possible to answer this question for any security reason then that’s understandable.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Before anybody answers this remember that Terry would love to know how C-IED teams operate. Remember Opsec!

In my day,any munitions disposal was done by us,the Armourers.
However,it depends on what Op's theatre you are in at the time who carries out a specific disposal of munitions but no,Rock's are not qualified for disposal of munitions.

If you would like to find out more on C IED, contact your friendly raf bd guys, We are usually more than happy to help you and your regt brethren out, In fact we have our own gunner who no doubt will give you a helping hand. It takes a long time to train eod guys up so that we know and understand what we are looking at, no disrespect to the regt but you have a lot of other things to be concentrating on whilst on the ground. This cross pollination of tasks will dilute the high level of skill the EOD teams have built up and un doubtably put yourselves at risk. If you want any more details PM me your work GPTN number and name and i'll organise a visit to wittering for you. eod is a clique world with teams fighting for jobs, bringing you lot into the picture to will only worsen bum fights

Have you looked on the MoD website there's quite a bit on there, the high risk stuff is army led RLC or RE.

Hi duffman,

like small arms, EOD is all army led whatever service its in, each service has its own speciality, RLC is IED stuff, RE is foreign airdropped stuff and stuff on army property, navy is sea weapons and navy property and RAF is allied forces air dropped and raf property, That said, The RAF has IED teams and we have some of the high risk IED guys trained to.

Ermmm are you sure about that? Might want to check your source...IED in the UK is not classed as High Threat and no 5131 Operators are HT IED operators in the 'Stan....yet.

There isn't many RAF HT operators but there will be more soon due to the current tempo of ops

I don't doubt that. The point I was trying to make is that at present the vast majority of RAF EOD isn't employed as HT operators.

Thats fair enough, i was only highlighting that its not only the Army that have HT operators, We are just as good if not better than the Army as we can do both the RLC an the REs jobs, We always get met with phrases like "oh didnt realise the raf had eod" Due to the current ops on the go all raf operators will be CMD and IED operators, thats in force now, cmd school then straight to ied school, We are just catching up on the HT now, it was said in an earlier reply that the high risk stuff is army and i wanted to point out that we do it to
