Hello all.

I'm ex RAF (out for 4 years) and thinking of joining the reserves (not gunner or FP). I just have a couple of questions for anyone currently serving with the reserves - pref the Lincoln area.

1. Does being ex RAF mean I have a higher chance of getting in due to military experience - (If the fitness/medical/interview is passed obviously)

2. Once in do ex RAF get deployed sooner than other entrants.

Many thanks.

Would being deployed faster than an ab initio be a problem?

no, quite the opposite - I have heard it can take a while to get OOA and if I were to get in - (after training etc) I wouldn't want to sit around for a year or two as it seems unfair that regulars are getting shafted L R and C if there are people there that could cover a slot....so to speak!

:SHi

i'm with Int Res (HQ at Waddo)

speaking from experience with my mob

it generally takes a about a year to do your basic recruit course and if the courses are timed right - training for your branch. then probably about 1-2 yrs on duty squadron to get up to speed before you are sent on an OOA.

I know some people in one of our sister units - 'double - Oh - sh*t' - who did their branch training and were on OOA within a few months of finishing (with a few weeks intensive pre-deployment training)

depends what mob you join, i think they are crying out for trained reservists to fill slots

thanks garfield70. is that time scale for ex and non ex forces. also, I am over an hour away from the base - is that an issue?

the Int Squadrons at Wadd recruit nationally - as long as you can get to your duty station on weekends and for your 2 weeks annual training - location is not an issue.(obviously a few hrs travelling either side of your weekend!)
i live about an hour from Marham where my posting is and am about 2hrs from Wadd

Hi PAGreewell - thanks for that - is that the sister unit Garfield70 mentioned? I have been looking at two of the sqn's there but I have been told by someone who works up at Cottesmore that one of them requires a second language.

Hi
I've just been reading through your posts.
It seems you could be just the type HQ Int Res are looking for.
Drop me a PM and I'll try to enlighten you

All - I know this is a bit late after the origional posting but...Im currently working in civvie Police Intelligence and interested in joining either the RAF intel reserves or the TA intel corps. Can anyone give me a run-down of what I could expect in an RAFR intel branch? the 'offical' website doesnt drop many clues other than saying 'you would gather, analyse and provide defence information'... helpful. any info apreciated.

I think the website is vague for a good reason, and therefore any extra info you're after which is not on the website is probably not going to be posted on here, either because people don't know themselves or because they can't talk about it....I'm guessing.

I've tried looking into the Int branch as well, and I found that you can specialise in Image analysis (Reserves Sqn 7010), or HUMINT (Human intelligence) (Reserves Sqn 7630), I think this involves questioning people. Then you have the general intelligence sqn's (Reserves Sqn 7006) which gather this information and analyse it and present it to either senior members, a front line sqn, Int HQ etc.

P.S. I'm not yet in the RAF, so my info may not be accurate

The best plan would be to attend one of their information days. They run about once a quarter. I suspect the next one will be in Jan 09. All three of the RauxAF Int sqn's are there so you can get more details on all of them and meet the people already in.
