Playing devils advocate.... It's prolly more capable...

I suppose this statement is true as long as you have control of the air.

The RAF dismissed this criticism, saying the number of aircrafts available doesn’t equal the strength of the force and its capability, as the UK’s latest missions abroad have shown.

We will.never see anything like the 1977 Silver jubilee review at Finningley.

Just out of interest when did we have the most aircraft in service post wat. I'd say 50s/60s.

Do we really need an Air Force? A few Typhoons in case some of those naughty Russkies sneak into our airspace or some drunk makes a bomb threat on a civilian airliner. We have the Royal Navy and our lovely carriers to project U.K. power around the world, nothing else required.

Some of the aircraft are multi-mission which means a wider spread of capability but an important facet of AirPower is rapid reach. If something happens in the Middle East you can have ISTAR assets with eyes on within 24 hours and hardware to deliver an effect within days and less types as they can re-role in theatre. It’s going to get complicated if something else then kicks off on a different continent not only for frontline but also support. Plus ops breaks things faster... and with less depth the level of available assets soon dips. And that’s just the hardware...

We’ll definitely have to pick and choose what we get up to until numbers return.

It looks to me like the RN never learnt the lesson of HMS Courageous in '40. Aircraft carriers operating alone and all that.

So do we have the same capability now that we had in the 60s 70s with our assets in Singapore Malta Cyprus .

Fewer assets and fewer folk to look after them, we could probably still be very active in the very early stages of a conflict but keeping enough assets serviceable in the long term is difficult. After a shortish time frame we may well suffer from reduced platform availability not necessarily through enemy action just the logistical and manpower issues involved in keeping up the level of activity we started with. The amount of £'s you wish to throw at the assets you are using also in a factor in these budget conscious days.

Should have been a little ‘f’...

The P8 will eventually become a true MRCA as it will be armed with Harpoons, Torpedoes, Sidewinders, hellfires, and a vast array of other death bringing weapons not yet thought of and it will be backed up by the Wedgtail (shhhhhhh) and whatever UAV the UK has at that point ;)

“The RAF will flourish in this new Era” said Air Vice Marshall Spiffing-Blythe, the AOC SACSH (Small Aircraft Chocks in Southern Hampshire).

Bring back the Gypsy Moths I say and team of Airfix enthusiast. We'll get blooming Ruskies with their pants down as we invade first. How say you guys, first one to bag a Babushka wins a crate of warm beer back at base.:PDT_Xtremez_29:
