Hello everyone! This is my first post on here so go gently with me...

I'm 25 (on Thursday) and obviously seriously thinking about joining the RAF, as an officer. I've got 2 law degrees, finished the LPC and am a registered legal executive, although I'm stuck doing research at a university at the moment (boring). I'm just starting to get a really good grip of current affairs (always read a newspaper, but starting to pay more attention to it now!). Fitness is, ahem, getting there...

There are 3 trades I'm interested in at the moment - RAFP, admin officer and legal officer. I wondered if anyone could give me a bit more information about these? Stuff like the trade-specific training, what the job actually entails (rather than what the careers website says) and the like. In particular, does anyone know whether the RAF will take you as a legal officer if you're a legal exec rather than a fully qualified solicitor (I haven't done a training contract)? If there are any legal officers floating about on here I'd love to hear from you.

Also, any info on the recruitment process, especially for someone a bit older like me, and on general life in the RAF would be gratefully received!

Finally (I promise), is it worth contacting the careers line or going to see an AFCO now, or should I wait until I've a better idea of what I want to do, done loads of current affairs research, got the fitness up, etc? I don't want to scupper my chances by getting in touch too early or anything (if that makes sense at all).

I know this is a bit general but it's only recently that I started considering the idea seriously so I'm still at the beginning of the whole process.

Thanks in advance :PDT_Xtremez_22:

Best advice is to go into the local AFCO and enquire as they can give you up to date gen, it's never to early to visit the AFCO!

Hi There

I'm 26 and going through the application process for RAFP. Not officer though.

The process is really straight forward and very quick. I started my application end of June and passed my medical today, will have my fitness within 2 weeks and then apply to Halton for my training dates. It will take a little longer going down the officer route. but not much longer.

If you want any more info PM me and i'll be happy to help.

Good luck and all the best.

Hey LadyLaw

I, like you, am in my mid-twenties and am currently in the RAF training system, heading to one day (in the hopefully no longer quite so distant future) to be an admin (sec) officer.

As who suggests it really is best to visit the AFCO and check. However my guess from the chat over here at Cranhell is that you probably won't qualify for legal, and almost certainly not for SERE. However I'm not a recruitment expert and that is merely my guess informed by gossip and speculation.

if you want to ask question on the training system, or any of that malarky feel free to PM me. I'll try to be honest but encouraging. Be aware everyone has a different experience here. I've had a pretty rough ride in training and my opinion of OACTU is, shall we say tainted by that experience. I'm somewhat cynical. However, I truely believe that the job at the end is worth it.

I went through Halton at 27 and to be honest probably found it no different to anyone else. The main differences would be sometimes looking at the way others act and thinking 'oh my god' but that can happen to anyone and having more life experience to draw on in general.

My application from first visit to Halton took 10 months but that was due to a number of factors, I do know people that took 2 months to get through and others that had to wait 18 months for their trade to open so it varies hugely, just go down and have a chat, as its been said, its never too early to start the process.

Thanks guys! Think I'll give the careers line a bell about the legal officer bit (I suspect you're right, Isis, but it doesn't hurt to ask). Then I'll have to get myself off down the AFCO and see what information I can get out of them. Then it's decision time!

I hadn't realised it could take as long as 18 months to get into training, though - I'd thought somewhere between 6 and 9 months. I guess it does depend on what trade you're going for, though.

Thanks again :PDT_Xtremez_30:
