Signed up here because I'm thinking of joining the RAF Reserve, hopefully joining 7006 or 7360 Squadron, but any would be great. I'm currently a History student in my first year.

Cheers

Sorry, forgot to mention that I'm in the deepest south-west, and if anyone would like to try and advise a more geographically logical squadron with interesting roles to me It'd be more than welcome!

If you want to join the RAuxAF then closer to you would be:

Medics and Movers at Lyneham, Swindon (may move to Brize Norton, Oxford soon) or the Helicopter support Sqn at Benson.

But remember it's only once a month for the trip and you'd get some money towards your petrol.

To be honest if you're in the south west then you might be better off with the RMR, RNR or even TA.

I thought that myself, I can hack once a month. Though I don't have a car, so the train might be a bit of a joke! My home town, where I'll be for a sizeable (5 month) portion of the year is a lot closer to both Bedfordshire and Lincoln, with much more access by rail. Is every weekend essential?

I have a lot of friends up and down the country at Universities, so weekends might be a case of getting the train to one of them on the Sunday (I don't know what time training would finish) and getting back to Uni as early as possible on Monday.

I'd really like to join the RAuxAF due to family history of RAF service, certainly far prefer it over the other reserve options if at all possible.

The Intelligence squadrons seem to recruit nationally, does this mean that rail travel is covered by the units? I'd have to reconsider if not. I wouldn't mind at all not really making money from doing it, but I don't think I can afford to be out of pocket.

National Sqns cover travel (at lowest cost) from anywhere in the UK - can be car, rail or even air.

You will have to consider getting to places other than Lincoln for training. It is not essential to attend every normal Sqn training weekend, but you will need to plan on attending all your basic and trade-specific training - very difficult to play catch up on any of this.

Hope that helps a bit - good for you to have a strong preference for the light blue!
