Ok...and a weary 3chord and 3Chord junior head into the third day of a (by now) roasting hot festival...
Stalkers: As is traditional for me, Sunday morning is usually spend in the smallest tent (Carling stage) checking out some lesser-know acts. First up are a NY punk act called Stalkers. A strange blend these - 4 typical skinny indie kids fronted by an extremely drunk biker who looks like he's got lost on the way home from a Motorhead gig. They play a nice line in Ramones-by-numbers and the scarey biker-guy ends the set by snapping the mike stand over his head - much to the annoyance of the stage manager....more of him later....
Make Model: From Glasgow and (apparently) Steve Lamaq's new favourite band. And very good they are too, nice harmonies and jangly guitars (twin Gretch attack for all u guitar heads out their) I really enjoyed them, as did my friends. They have some very memorable songs especially "Glasgow's No.1" which I'm still singing today. Check them out.
I Was A Cub Scout: Just when I was marvelling at the quality of Make Model, along comes another immense band. Nottingham duo IWACS absolutely blow the roof off the tent. Comprising a mad, but phenomenal drummer and a sweet, innocent looking guitarist/keyboard/singer - they make the most spectacular noise. The sweet little guitarist begins to fling himself around the stage and putting all his soul into this performance. I'm hooked, 3 chord jr. is hooked, my mates are hooked. The guitarist whils around and sings his heart out, he even runs across and plants a kiss on his little brother's cheek who's watching with mum and dad from stage left...genius!! As the set runs on, they ask the stage manager "how much time is left?" As we are right at the barrier, we hear him say "4 minutes guys" As they change guitar and get ready to go , he comes on and says "Sorry, thats your time over.." Cue boos from all of us, dismay from the band who have yet to play their best song...The stage manager gets on the mike and says "If we run over now, they'll be no time for the headline act."
Now, bearing in mind it's only 1pm and they don't appear until 10.30pm....The singer grabs the mike and goes "F***ing f*** the headline act!!" and launches into the song...whilst one of their management bundles the stage manager off in a head-lock!!
The place goes into orbit....!!!!!!!!!!
Another band I would definately go and watch in their own right. Remember that name.
Billy Talent: Today's only foray to the main stage sees Ontario's Billy Talent rock up a great set. I always describe them as "the Kerrang band its ok to like" 3Chord Jr. is ecstatic - after yesterday's Tom De Longe debacle, he's finally seen a great show from one of his favourite bands. He sings every word to every song...
The Casualties: Now the young'uns had his treat, it's Dad's turn and I pitch up to the Lock up to watch old school punks, The Casualties. They have a snag as their singer has been refused entry to the UK by immigration (yey !!! punks not dead!) so the guitarist and bassist share the vocal duties. It's a full-on blast at society, Bush and Blair....all mohicans and angry shouting...it's like I'm magically back in 1978. I love it and so does 3 Chord jr.....he's off to find their back catalouge.
The Macabees: I squeeze into the Radio 1 stage for the first time this weekend (blimey!) to watch another of my fav bands of 2007. Tragically - I'm forced to watch from a distance as everyone else on the face of the planet has exactly the same idea (maybe cos Fall Out Boy sucking on the main stage..?) I hear them play "Latchmere" and "Your Dress" then it gets a little frustrating and I leave...shame. Hopefully catch them in their own right sometime.
Ricky Grover: My final foray of the weekend takes me to the comedy stage again, where I'm excited to watch one of my comedic heroes - Mr Ricky Grover. He delivers one of the best 30 mins of comedy I've seen in years, threatens to (genuinely) chin a heckler and make all us fat blokes feel great about ourselves again. I leave for the exits tired but very happy.
Yes, I left early as the Sunday main stage filled me with dread. I would have loved to have taken my life in my hands and watched The Gallows..but I doibt the med centre would have been so understanding when I pitched up in several pieces.
Hope you enjoyed reading the reviews as much as I enjoyed writing them - bring on 2008.
