Hello everyone,

This will also be kind of my, Hello I am new here.

I have just today been recommended by Henlow for a Medical Discharge. Naturally I know that it is now 6-8 weeks away when I will hear from Air Cmd Manning.

So, what am I asking?
Well my discharge is rather embarassing.

Due to a family upset a while ago I started suffereing from anxiety and panic attacks etc. I then lost my relationship with my bird and naturally lost money from moving out of our home.

So what did I do. Work hard and Play Hard. Which I did, and it worked........for a while.

Basically i started having depressive episodes which was probably down to drinking too much........what a Tw@t eh!!

So on my med board form the recommendation is for

ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY SYNDROME AND DEPRESSIVE EPISODE

My shrink at (i expect some know where) did say i would still be eligible for gratuity and pension. Ive served 17 years with and unfortunate sh1tty 3 of them Im afraid. Well not work wise, my last appraisal from Feb 2007 was gleaming as i was still able to work through my nasty morning attacks. It wasn't until Aug last year that I was made Temp Non Effective.

Any thoughts on this. As in will the next board say "he dosent deserve his gratuity and pension because he was abusing alcohol" although in the report it was described as "self medicating" to block out negative feelings and distress. I never actually got drunk I just drank enough to chill me out.

I have just been med discharged, leaving as a CPL after 12 years but with a heart condition which is a genetic condition.

I was given what is around half a SNCO full pension after 22 yrs, I got a lump sum and a service invalidity pension, after a medical at a doctors in town I was also awarded a war pension, this medical was also to determine lasting effects and how much it effected my life, this was deemed for me to be at 20% disabled.

As far as I understand it, you will get a service invalidity pension and a lump sum, because you were close to finishing your 22 years. The war pension may be different because you condition may or may not get worse, or you could fully recover, this will depend entirely on what the doc's and trick-cyclist say, and also you.

Your S.I.P will stay the same, as for the amount it should be the same-ish as to what you would have got at your 22. It will be back dated to your final paid day. For me this took about 3 weeks to come through and was back dated and then paid on the start of every month.

If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me.

And last of all, It's OK being out, it's nothing to worry about:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Im kind of looking forward to a fresh start.

My only concern is that Manning dont decide to screw me for using ale to self medicate, if you know what i mean?

It's a discharge from Henlow, not ACOS.

All manning will do is forget to give you the paper work, like me:PDT_Xtremez_21:

They will send your service doc's to the service personnel and veterans agency, might be an idea to contact them too, they will help sort out a place to live in an area of your choice if you don't have anywhere. (if you leave the services normally you are not entitled to a council house but through a med discharge you are)

I think a lot depends upon what you are taking for Depression and whether you actually want OUT.
The booze problem can be beaten and the depression can be over-come (been there, done that).

It can be a cold and friendless place outside, when you are not feelin' up to par, what with all the confusion of somewhere to live and some help, etc..

And the pills taste bloody awful. And they don't mix with large brandies. . . .

Ive not touched a drop now for nearly 3 weeks. Have the odd mood swing and feel grump once in a while.

Sleep is difficult, as in the times i manage to nod off. Still wake up 6 hours later all the time. I reckon thats a by product of service life.

I see the doc at DCMH Catterick on Friday, will see if she knows of anyone that was just booted out with nothing because they were foolish enough to self medicate....so to speak.

Is there a link to QR's that anybody knows about, I just fancy having a look at conditions of Med Discharge that ACOS have to go by.

Cheers

Crash,
Have a chat with the doc at catterick, a social worker is available who can help you with the finance and housing side prior to your discharge date.
Good luck for your future.

I would strongly suggest a gab with the Chief Clerk either in person, or if you are at home on the phone. That is where you will probably get the latest and greatest gen from.

Please please please make as much use of the welfare system as you possibly can in the run up to and after your out date. Go and visit the Padre, he/she is not just an expert on dishing out religion but also in the care of people.

Make use of SSAFA and the Legion and RAFA. I know Combat Stress can help even if your condition is not 'combat' induced. If all else fails get to a library and get on here. The goat is not just about slagging movers and the latest exploits of Penguin Sucks.

Above all remember. You have given for this country in whatever way small or large and the help is there. You are not alone (and I don't mean with schizophrenia either!)

Good luck to you

Jimps
