Been listening to the reports that the Jocks are having to get refs in from Ireland to cover this weekends games due to the scottish being scared.

They have received threats on and off the pitch and are now on strike this weekend.

What are we expected to do ban all fans from the terraces so they dont get abuse hurled at them? Surely this is a matter for the police to sort out and not to punish the clubs and the fans.

I am sure football refs for years have received abuse whether rightly or wrongly but if you put yourself in that position then what do you expect.

Having watched the Premiership this season I have been amazed at the poor standard of refereeing, but the FA continues to defend them and some even seem to have reached a 'Prima Dona' status. You are not telling me that that these refs here have not received abuse and threats yet they carry on.

I stongly believe that the FA and FIFA need to revisit goal line/ electronic 4th Official technology, most major sports use it now to great effect without ruining the flow of the game.

Referees should also be 'punished for poor performance and 'relegated to the lower divisions if they cannot reach the Prem level. I would also like to see Refs take a stronger stance wrt players immediately surrounding them after any contencious issue/tackle/decision. Something that would disappear overnight if a video ref was used, it might also stop cheating tw@ts diving as if being shot by a sniper

My team have not escaped poor refereeing decisions but lets face it has any team

Certainley not mine!!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_25:

I think that its more to do with the team's players and managers behaviour rather than the fans.
Then again what can you expect from a load of overrated Sunday league teams..fishing for a bite

Getting foreign refs is a kick in the teeth to the linesman, the only one who can hold his head up in this sorry saga. To be a prem linesman he has to be a qualified first division ref (well thats how it is down here), so the SFA should just promote all the officials up a level.

I had to check that this thread is not in the Fight Club, because this is about the most ridiculous and offensive remark I have read in ages. Nobody - NOBODY - should expect to receive abuse for any reason whatsoever. Not at work, not at rest and certainly not at play, for let's be clear, football is only a game (Shanks was talking with his tongue firmly in his cheek and anyone who doesn't realise this is an idiot).

I am a sports official - I umpire local league cricket - and I can assure you there is no way whatsoever that I would put up with the crap that football referees at all levels receive. It's disgusting, it offends common decency and much as I love football it is one of the many things that is turning me away from the sport.

Walk a mile in their shoes!

I referee local leagues in the states and the kids don't fight, don't argue and play fair. They are competitive but fair. Parents are passionate about the game, but they are happy to shut up when they over step mark against officials.

Go to the UK and it becomes the god given right for every fan to abuse the referee, be it in professional leagues or on a Sunday. It is a thankless task and no where enough money is paid to them.

If you are saying dry your eyes and take the threats then you are mad. No one deserves that abuse and shame on you for criticizing them for striking.

It is time FIFA binned all the fair play cr*p and gave referee's and linesmen the same protection and powers as the Rugby lot. Hit a ref, banned for life. use a fourth official with TV playback, Linesmen have the powers of intervention of a touch judge, Dissent and a free kick gets moved up 10 yards, etc. If a manager or player abuses a ref, a long ban and very big fine. If they cannot stop doing it, ban them for life..

All well and good but this strike isn`t sparked by the atrocities visited upon referees in general, this was sparked by a lying scumbag who tried to get others to lie for him. I`m afraid he should be left high and dry by his colleagues and his masters.

The sooner Scottish football is consigned to history the better, let the ******* porridge wogs return to chasing haggis over their English owned moors for the entertainment of the toffs.

I went to see Cagliari against Udinese and I learnt what *******o and other colourful phrases meant, all shouted against the poor bloke in the middle. I mean we don't launch flares at our linesmen so we can't be that bad.

When I said abuse then I was on about the likes of 'Where's your glasses Ref' etc etc not hurling death threats, I would challenge most people to deny ever having had a pop at the ref at ant sporting event especially after a decision goes against your team. Even Prm managers have a pop at the ref on TV, its that level of abuse/criticism I am alluding too not some of the hate fueled rants that you hear from some individuals on the Terraces. I am not in possession of the full SP wrt this issue in Scotland but as I said in my OP and has been mentioned by others, its time we got the 4th official involved in football.

Another factor is the woeful stance of the FA on punsihing players and of course the players themselves.

Lets face it if you are earning £100,000 a week then fining someone £10-20 grand for misconduct is no deterrent and when they are suspended they still get paid so what message does that put across.

You're spot on there, I think they FA just think it's part and parcel of the game, just look at the fines handed out at the end the season for yellow/red cards, about £100k normally may as well be a £100.

It has to start at the top, stop the stars being able to abuse and shove Refs and eventually it will stop at grass roots who only copy what they see because they think its ok.

Like pathetic dives in the box hoping for a penalty, Red Card them or copy rugby and have a commissioner site them with say a 3 match ban. Most clubs would soon stop players diving if there star strikers were only availble for half the season.

The desire to do anything about these situations is not there because most of the people in a position to do anything about it are too busy enjoying the gravy train. So until it is the humble Ref will continue to be the loser!
