Was talking about MT and all that the other day, and the topic of paying for your licence came up i.e. if you have paid for your own cat B licence you don't 'have to' get a 600 and drive for the RAF? is this right? or is it just a case of it's part of your job and you just can't refuse....I've heard of a few who have just ripped up their 600s for various reasons, but can you actually do this, legally does anyone know?

Slightly off topic, but when I applied for a Driving permit (1629?), I was refused for lack of experience. Yet I rode a Norton Commando and owned an MGB GT (was in the early 70's). My application was to drive the duty doc around the base in a mini for home visits!

Using the same Logic - I paid for my own Aircraft Maintenance Licences which I got in 1989 and for the next ten years the RAF refused to let me use them at work. Does that surprise you too?

I did use them well at evenings and weekends though - but not for the RAF.

The situation you describe is the same world-wide:-

If the company didnt pay for it - it aint the company's property.

As long as you're going to follow your own belief about the issue and don't expect anyone who paid for their own civvie licence and has chosen to have a 600 to drive you anywhere in a service vehicle, then fine. Certainly when my 10 year licence renewal came up last year, because my job spec included driving, I claimed the renewal fee back through JPA. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Adding my twopennyworth, I would say that, unless the RAF paid for you to pass your driving test, then they have no legal right to force you to drive. After all, when you joined up, did they stipulate that you would HAVE to drive? There's still plenty of people in the RAF who don't drive and they can't force them to take their driving test.Like I said, this is only my personal view so not sure if it's right. However, I would say have a read of SSOs and see if it's in there.

The RAF paid for all my licences from B throught to C+E and I'm not MTD so I really had no choice but to drive as required. As you paid for your licence why should be made to drive if you don't want to. The odd prang in an MT vehicle will soon put paid to your licence, they will take the F600 off you sharpish, not that I'm condoning that mind.

No-one can force you to drive a vehicle; whether they have paid for your licence or not.

A quick DI (theres nearly always something wrong with it) or saying you are too fatigued to drive will quickly put an end to any forced driving duties.

If they try to force you; ask for it in writing; amazing how many JEngOs have changed their tune when asked to provide a written order.

Depends on how far you want to push it really.

All a bit by the by but interesting none the less. To add to the topic if you look here:

http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/jobs/firefighter.cfm

You'll see that far from the RAF paying for your driving license we in the Firefighter trade must actually hold a Cat B license as a prerequisite before joining up so you could say, yes as you need the license for the job and must have payed for it yourself they can insist on you holding an FMT600/FMT600A and driving MT vehicles.

I can also confirm that this is the case as I have not had an LAC in at least the last 5 years who has not already held a Cat B license.

They do however send you to Leconfield for Cat C licenses to drive the big red ones.

What was the reference for claiming it back as I'm in the same position and reckon that it's only fair that they pay for the renewal.

The reference I used was from both the TORs for the job I did and the leaflet (Lflt 1553, IIRC) in the AP3392 that applicants for the job are referred to when they volunteer that states you need to be Q-D-B.

I'd guess if it's in just your TORs that you have to drive service vehicles or hold Q-D-B then you'll be OK. If it's in not there, then just re-write your TORs so it is then claim it back on JPA. :PDT_Xtremez_30:That advice came from MTTT&L at the rather large transport base in Oxfordshire.

RAF paid for me to learn to drive & I was told I couldn't refuse to drive MT vehicles,so they sent me on a CVR(T) course & I've not driven one since the course!

MOD do not insure their vehicles, they take it on risk and pay up for any 'at fault' accidents. The upshot is that you are not covered for personal injury or loss of your belongings (e.g laptop etc) if you crash. Moreover, you don't have the legal cover to sue someone and would have to take the no-win-no-fee route. The mob does little to assist you.

For those reasons, I do not drive MT. I take the train (v expensive) or if it suits me I take my own car and claim. But I do not drive MT and nobody can make you. Period.

Try speeding on the peritrack, crossing the end of the runway without permission(the lights wernt working) when an aircraft was on finals, and passing too close to a hellicopter that had its rotor turning.

The first two got me a bollocking the last one got me off driving on the Airyard and millitary vehicles for 3 months.
