Apparently the results of the Reserves Review will be announced 11 Jul 11. Hope the Reserve Regiment units don't get the caning rumoured to be coming their way.

Lets hope not Chopsy as I'm just about to start the application process (next week) and it will be gutting if the reserves get canned!

Had an interesting back and forth with some people yesterday on another forum.

Essentially the upshot is that the RAuxAF and the RMR are the gold standard in reserve force professionalism (and if you read the review RAuxAF is well integrated within the RAF). But the TA appears to be a barely coherent mob who lack focus, training, discipline or the operational deployments that RMR/RAuxAF have had in the last 10 years.

OK, I exaggerated a touch on that last one but the point I am making others seem to be promoting. The TA needs root and branch overhaul to match the vision the government has for it. And that can only be a good thing for us.

While the TA is a shambles and the Army descend into it's usual tribal backstabbing over who is to blame and who will fix it RAuxAf/RMR will simply build on the progress made to date and (hopefully) expand to meet the demand.

There was a fight thread on this site a couple of weeks ago where we got to argue the toss over whether Auggies would be able to take on the "tough" RAF engineering jobs that require currency. Yes, we have a good size Regt. force so I suspect that we will see Rock numbers go up as the path of least resistance but also maybe a move to start to augment the tech trades? So anyone working in a garage on a Range Rover dealership could get tapped up soon :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Do you think one of the reasons is we, apart from the medics, (who will always be up to date with their skills) only deploy a few auggies with each unit, so we can support them in their role. Maybe I'm wrong about only a few.

On reading the report it makes the point that the RAF does not use Reserves for engineering due to the need to maintain currency. Instead it mentions that new squadrons may form for Cyber and Aerial Erection.

It also states the RAF regiment should be brought up to full strength and I winder whether they will play a role in homeland defence, something the reserves generally are going to do more of. Also more Medics, Police and Int.

Due to the specialist nature of some roles these will be impracticle for them to be farmed out to reservists and will enjoy a protected status.

However, there are probably many roles where people have very transferrable skills and can easily transit from one life to the other with little additional training.

My old trade of Shiney is a prime example, unless as a part of FU deployment, the tasks I completed on ops were completely different to the ones I did back in my normal non deployed role. These jobs could easily be completed by a well motivated Auggie.

I think there could be advances to be made in several trades to increase the involvement of reservists in the RAF. Additionally, as we will have a fair number of protected roles there will be pressure on the these trades to take on a larger share to meet targets that will inevitably come down from above.

Reservist Armourers please.

I'll be at the recruiting office tomorrow.

Part time bombing sounds awesome to me :D

I guess this heavily includes people's terms of regular service, reserve then? A nice easy way to bring reserves strength up instantly!

I always thought the idea of reserves was to fill gaps in an emergency not to bail the government out after making too many cuts too deep.
