HELP!!!

Any ideas why my pc keeps resetting itself of it's own accord?

It just shuts down and reboots, as if I've hit the reset button.
Also, IE.7 keeps binning out for no apparent reason.

Usually when I'm right in the middle of something too.......

Any ideas??

Could be several things but i had the same about 12 months ago and it was my power supply......thats probably the easiest of the ones it could be....

sound's like you might have a virus there chap :PDT_Xtremez_09:
the same thing happened to me a few years back i had to get a patch off the internet to fix it.
it was a right old pain in the a***e ::/:

Have you checked for viruses/infections recently. I had similar symptons a few months back. There were a few lurking nasties in my system that NAV wasn't picking up. Try www.macrovirus.com for a freebie scan. Good luck. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

first thing I would suggest is take it apart and give it a dam good clean, all fans M/board and heatsinks and PSU, then as soon as you turn it back on do a virus scan.

You may have CPu or system monitoring software on your computer that turns the system off once your system reaches the maximum permitted temperature.

Are there any monitoring programs on your PC?

I had this just before crimbo. I narrowed it down to the motherboard or PSU.

But on the other hand it could be all of the above.

Regarding what others have said, I agree it's most likely to be either:

1) The PSU (faulty)
2) A virus (even if you have AV it doesn't always detect it)
3) CPU Safety feature turning the PC off due to overheating (check ventilation and that all fans work - including the PSU fan)

Does it happen when you are doing something specific? Or is it random?

WT, before we can give you any help a run down on your system is essential.
It's useful to know;
Your Processor, RAM, Operating System, Anti virus, Firewall, Spyware protection running.
What are you doing when it restarts? Browsing t'interweb or hardcore gaming?
Is it a new system? Self built? PC World?
Is the Anti Virus upto date?
How often are the random restarts? constant or ok after 1 or 2?
How long before a restart?
Have you installed or updated anything recently?
Anything like this is essential really before anyone will be any use to you.

As far as the shutting down problem, as posted earlier, any and all could be the problem.

The IE7 problem sounds similar to one I experienced last week. I solved that one by opening IE from: Start>Accesories>System Tools>Internet Explorer(No Add-Ons).

This opened IE7 and allowed me to work through the add ons, disabling them one by one until IE7 opened from its usual shortcut. I disabled the following and had no problems after:{CD67F990-D8E9-11DZ-98FE-00C0318AFE}.
Can't remember installing it mind. Hope this helps.

Easy way to check if it is a thermal problem, when the computer starts press the key to enter the BIOS(usually esc, del or F2).

There is on most motherboards a PC Health option that will display CPU/MotherBoard temperature. Keep an eye on this page and see if the computer resets at all. Even if it doesn't have a page that shows you leave it in the BIOS for a while and see if it resets at all.

This will give you an indication of an overheating problem.

As other people have suggested clean the fans on the CPU etc and you might want to consider re-seating the CPU memory and cards.
