Hi,

Got a quick question - i've been signed off the fitness test for 3 months, undergoing a lower limbs rehab course. The course is helping, and I will probably be able to do the fitness test without any pain when i'm due next month. Only problem is, i've not run at all since being signed off, and am correspondingly quite unfit! Am I right in thinking I need to do a 'Return To Fitness' course before doing the fitness test?? (i'm on leave at the mo)

Cheers

I would demand it personally, in fact I did, ask the SMO if you have any problems to sign you as fit to do the test with no structured programme of rehab, you should be referred to either the Physio or the RI or PTIs for a plan. You should get an extension to your sign off to carry out such a programme.

If you encounter any pain you need to go back to the doc/physio to get it noted and remedial.

You have the right to ask for a second opinion; if you have any doubts but it is important that such things get added to your notes.

Ron, I was in your boat this time last year. After a lengthy period of recovery after a knee injury, I took a MSFT which was supervised by the RI PTI. There was no pressure on me to pass - it was purely for him and the medics to see what stage I was at so they could then tailor any further training package accordingly.

That's good, I had 28 days after a year downgraded to pass my fitness test, which of course I didn't pass,I then got warned and went on remedial!!

If you are downgraded one of the things that gets you upgraded is passing a fitness test.

Whilst downgraded you are under the care of the med centre and the fitness test if failed shouldn't be detrimental. It's an indicator to you, the doc, the physio and/or RI of where you are.

This is good to know. I've been downgraded since February last year and I'm slowly heading towards an upgrade soon. I've been bricking it about the FT as I haven't been able to do any training. I shall be chatting to my nearest PTI to see what he can offer me (that's if the Navy offer the same service........)

I guess to clear things up, you could mention it to your boss about your "fear of failing after a lengthy downgrade" in a general conversation over a crewroom cup of tea. This would break the ice incase of a future failure, and may soften the blow.

You could speak with the Remedial Instructor on some advice, come clean about how fit you really are. Then in your own time, start putting laps around the housing estate in whilst the wife baths the kids/watches corrie, eastenders etc.

At our secret RAF base it's the Med Centre that refer you for the Return To Fitness program when they think you're ready. Next step is an appointment with the gym RI PTI who goes through the rehab programme and then monitors you throughout including some supervised sessions. If at any stage you have a relapse then it's back to Med Centre and they re-evaluate.

It's in some publication that after being signed off from the injury you get a certain amount of time grace before taking a fitness test, its been discussed on the goat, you need to find it, or ask the adminners/med centre to clarify

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as it's now affecting me!

Four weeks ago I was partially upgraded, including being upgraded as 'Fit to undertake RN Fitness Test' (yes, I said RN, stick with me here!).

After what I read on this thread, I went to the med centre hoping to chat to a doc concerning a return to fitness package. I was fobbed off to some young MA who hadn't heard of it and he just gave me a copy of my latest downgrade proforma saying that "that proves you've got 3 months to take your test".

And that's it! No carefully managed fitness routine for me, just a deadline which at the moment, I'm struggling to meet due to my ongoing problems. The Navy PTI's hadn't heard of the package either. Is it just a RAF thing? I'm a bit stuck as the Navy are my primary care down here so I have to abide by their rules. I suppose I'll just have to come up with my own package.

Any ideas?

When I was downgraded for my knee I was immediately sent to physio who worked out a return to fitness programme for me - not sure if it was just a Station Commander's initiative cos of the amount of downgrades he had but it worked - by the time I finished the programme and had to take the test, I was fit!
