Almost 10.5 million people (ex servicemen of all arms and their dependants) are eligible for financial, social and emotional support from The Royal British Legion. The annual Poppy Appeal is their most prominent appeal campaign, but it doesn't just stop there, on Nov 11th. There is much more to The Legion than just Remembrance Day. They will be there for any ex serviceman or his/her family should they need help.

As a serving soldier, this is a charity that I can easily identify with. So on Sunday April 22nd 2007 I will be running the 2007 London Marathon to raise funds and awareness for the The Legion. Please lend me your support in aid of this cause.

There is No Minimum donation; you can give as much, or as little as you like (just change the ammount in the box).

No bigger mistake was ever made than the man who did nothing because he could only do a little.

Trg thus far:

28 Nov 2006
I think I may have set myself a slightly ambitious target time for a first time marathon... I'm aiming at 3hrs 40m. I estimated at what I thought would be a reasonable time before working out that I'd have to run at 12kmph (8mph) on average. I'm currently capable of sustaining that for about 9m. I'm going to keep aiming high though... Just see what happens (".)

Week One
Well, that’s the first week of my training program in the bag. Finishing yesterday with a 9mile run in 1hr 35mins, training so far has been okay, although I have to admit I was starting to suffer a bit in the last 2 miles. I only hope I settle into the training rather than beginning to suffer more and more as the distances increase (fat chance of that I think).

Week Two
Most of this week’s training was lost due to acute abdominal pain that started on Wednesday morning and lasted up until Saturday. Anything more than a gentle shuffle was really not fun. A visit to the quack on Monday morning (after it had all but subsided) for a blood test and a bit of prodding, and everything seems hunky-dory again. Meanwhile, I’ve started my training program again, and hope that the disruption hasn’t knocked me back too far... Fingers crossed.

Week Three
Well, I’m glad to be able to report that the loss of valuable training last week doesn’t seem to have had any seriously adverse effect to the program. I managed to adhere strictly to this week’s program without any recurrence of discomfort, and even managed to beat Sunday’s target time over 10km by a whole 3 seconds! Let’s hope this trend continues.

Week Four
Week four’s training went smoothly and without hitch. I went to the FLM seminar in London on Saturday and picked up some helpful hints and tips on training and what to expect on the big day. Sunday culminated in another 10km run, on which I managed to knock off almost minute from last week’s time. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with any improvement in my fitness or technique or whether it was just because I had a target to aim for. I have to admit that the novelty of the training is starting to wear off, and motivating myself out of the door is becoming more of a challenge (particularly when I have 10km of interval training like today). Let’s hope the weather holds up, or it’ll become nigh on impossible.

Week 5
Another week of good training, slowly building up to 15miles on Sunday. Unfortunately I misread the program (looked at wrong week) on Saturday, and ran 5miles in stead of having a rest day ****** . The 15 miles on Sunday was a bit of a struggle towards the end, my heart-rate stayed low but my legs started stiffening up in the last few miles… the 1st 7.5 miles took me 55mins, and the remainder took me 1hr 16mins. Still, I have some time to improve that before Apr 22nd.

Wow PPO- looking good! i don't know how you manage to keep up a trainigntempo, i'm rubbish at it! Good Luck mate :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Week Six
A fairly uneventful week’s training this time, with 6 mile runs all week, broken up using different training methods and speeds. Again I’m finding it difficult to motivate myself out of the door at the moment, particularly in bad weather or poor light. Though I’m determined not to let myself slip into skipping the odd session here and there, reasoning that to do so could ruin my efforts so far. Only one 6 miler in next week’s schedule, so I’m looking forward to the change.

Week Seven
A much better week this week… Half way through my training I’ve started feeling an improvement in my fitness level. Recovery seems slightly quicker this week and distances are increasing before I start feeling tired. On Sunday I ran 10miles in an hour and twenty one minutes (averaging 7mph). This was in poor weather and over hills, so I’m quite happy with that time. Starting to feel a bit more confident of getting somewhere near my rather ambitious target time.

Week Eight
A fairly enjoyable week (as enjoyable as running can get), with good weather and no real struggling, until Sunday that is. The 18miles started well with a well paced first half. However the legs began tightening up at around the 10mile point and try as did to stave it off, the last 3miles or so became almost a shuffle. I managed to get round in 2hrs 37mins, averaging 6.9mph. I’m still optimistic, let’s just see if I'm capable of walking tomorrow.

Cheers wgaf

Week Nine
This has not been the most motivated week’s training. The novelty is really starting to wear off now, and I’m looking forward to the 23rd of April as the day it will all be over. As far as the training itself is concerned, I have managed (just about) to motivate myself out of the door for all my runs. Sunday’s half marathon was a success in that I beat the target time given in my training program (1hr 52mins) by 6minutes, and I remain quietly confident that I’ll be able to keep that up on the day. With 5 weeks to go let’s hope my struggling motivation improves.

Please guys, clicky linky and sponsor.

Week Ten
One Month To Go! All my registration forms and Legion running kit arrived on Monday, so I now have my running number, gimp suit and start point. I think this set me up for a reasonably good week’s training this time… no donations all week, but then I can’t expect to be able to compete with Dawn French's cleavage (you know you would) or Lenny Henry's Big Red One (ladies). Sunday meant running another half marathon (this time my target was 1hr 50mins), I beat my target time by the same margin as last week, so currently I’m quite pleased with my progress. Next week will be the longest of all my training runs (20 miles) before the big event. I’ll be interested to see what kind of pace I can maintain, even if I’m boring the pants off everyone else!

PPO, I am in awe. Just started getting back into training and it is killing me to do a measly 5.5 km. You are an inspiration to all of us lardy feckers that need to get off our chairs and do something worthwhile.

Far from it mate, you are doing a blinding job. Good luck for your run ! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Week Eleven
Disaster!
On Sunday’s 20 miler I finished 8 minutes behind schedule (that’s a whole mile). Entirely down to dehydration, I started feeling the cramps at about the 12-13mile point. Like week eight, I kept it off for as long as I could but ended up looking like constipated power walker, completely unable to open my stride. That’s the last of my long runs completed now (until the big day), I’m just hoping that the regular water stops will keep me going and that the weather on the day isn’t quite so warm.

Come on fellas, clicky linky. That's what it's there for. My morale needs the lift.

Cheers AllWoman, you're all heart. And the 1st to do the clicky thing. Nice one.

Weeks Twelve and Thirteen
Both week twelve and week thirteen have been reasonably smooth, hitch free weeks, with nothing of any notable value to report. I’m still quite concerned about the poor performance of the 20mile run, but haven’t had any reoccurrences. This last Sunday’s run was 10 miles at an easy pace and, even in the heat of the day, I still trotted around in 1hr 28 - averaging 7 miles an hour. Looking forward, I don’t think I should have too many problems completing the course, but if the hot weather is set to continue, I will almost certainly have to revise my target time. In a week’s time, it’ll all be over!
