Hi there.

Ive been thinking about trying an out of trade job and two of the things that interests me is:
a, becoming an instructor at Halton.
b, recruiting in an AFCO

Could anyone tell me what it's like being an instructor on RTS or working in an AFCO.

Both as a Cpl and Sgt

I've been in 15 years, done 1st line, 2nd line, bay, 2xOOA in KAF and Mountain Rescue in Scotland and thought that with my experience and enthusiasm for the RAF, I might be good as an instructor or recruiter.

Many thanks,

MF

AFCO - Your first hurdle is getting released from TG1, then the 2nd is getting the AFCO job.

Good Luck...though my drafter said no on the phone. :(

As has been alluded to, getting out of trade is the hard part. I know the technical trades, especially TG2, find it massively difficult to get into jobs like AFCO posts. If/when you can get clearance to apply for an AFCO, it then becomes a case of the best person being selected for the job. The CM provides a list of candidates to the AFCO OC who then interviews and selects the best person. So you have as much chance as everyone else applying.

AFCO is really enjoyable but not a cushy number like some believe. Non clerical trades find the paperwork off putting but having shared an office with an armourer he grasped it pretty well. Visits to schools and cadets can be a drag but if you can handle the public speaking part it is highly enjoyable IF you get out of trade.

One thing an AFCO tour will do for you though is show that you have extra capacity to deal with work that's outside of your normal skillset, managing people and resources in a way that you wouldn't normally be doing on a RAF station and being in a position to really enhance the profile of the RAF. Corporal is the lowest rank in a AFCO but you will find that pretty much everything gets organised by them - everything from controlling the office MT to organising huge regional recruiting events, including dealing with external agencies, the RAF PR branches, P&SS, etc. Not to be sniffed at and if things go well, you really are showered with glory. I have lost count of the amount of friends of mine in the recruiting arena who come away from an AFCO tour either promoted, or with promotion in the bag.

i spent 3 and a half years as a recruiter and part of an Outreach Team. I found the recruiting a bit of a drag to be honest due to the fact that I hate being desk bound but really rewarding at the same time when you have invested a lot of time and effort into a candidate and they get their Phase 1 date. I absolutely loved Outreach work. as has already been said, not as cushy as people think, long hours travelling all over your AOR and if public speaking isn't to your liking then forget it. I consider my time in the AFCO world as the best tour of my career, 19 years, and would encourage anyone who is interested to give it a shot, if your trade desk releases you that is! Good Luck.

If I was you, I would go for rts instructor. I'm on day 27 of rts, and the instructors seem to get a serious amount of pride and satisfaction from building up us recruits from civvies, to marching, shooting, running, smart, military personnel.

I did a tour in AFCO (90-93) thoroughly enjoyed it, yes there was a lot of paperwork, which was gradually replaced with IT. It was nice to be in town and get out and about. We were a small team and were often busy. As a techie I was of course superior to the non -tech types!Thought about RTS instructor, but I did not like the thought of the drill and bullsh*t! I was a trade instructor for a several years which was great, got my civvy qulaifications and now have a good civvy job in FE!
