Mrs Ribs and I have managed to blag a few days in San Diego, has anybody that has been got any tips regarding sights, restaurants and HOTAC etc.

Cheers

Get yourself up to Old Town - there are a couple of shops that sell the usual tourist tat, but some nice bars and restaurants, as well as some old style buildings.

I would also reccommend a trip to the Gas Light district - there is a pretty good steak house down there - you cook your own steak!

I am also not sure if this is still the case, but if you go to Seaworld and show your 1250 then I am pretty sure that you and your family can get in for free.

Cant remember the names of the good bars, but definately take your passport out with you. Americans dont trust the 1250 for proof of age to get in a bar!

Quality night out, dead jealous:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Try the dockyard base for accommodation. Was $10 per night for a family room about 5 years ago. Only $1 on the tram from the front gate into town. Morale, Welfare and Recreation department should be able to help and also provides discounted tickets for various attractions.

This is true - a mate of mine was asked to get his 1250 out - it had been in his wallet for so long that when he prised it out the photo face stuck to the plastic on his wallet - he spent the night stood on the kerbside!!

There is the USS Midway aircraft carrier and the star of India and a few other ships to look around inc a russian sub. All of which are outside my hotel window.
Sea world, the zoo and the gas lamp.

Edit to add: Give me a few days and I will tell you what the place is like, I got into te hotel about 2 hrs ago.

Do a search on herosalute, they will get you tickets for seaworld. You can't just wave a 1250 anymore.

May be worth getting hold of ITT at NAS North Island and seeing what they can sort for you.

Why not visit the headquarters of the finest offshore Gas Turbines in the world. Solar Turbines.
As for tips, 1. Deffo take your Passport out with you
2. Dont wear rugby or football shirts or scruffy T-shirts as they are very Anal about niffnaff in some of the good bars.
3. Dont count your change over a grid!
Enjoy.

The Gas Lamp area is excellent, if not a little pricy - the Gas Lamp Strip Joint is a rather fine cook it yourself steak house, I can recommend the New York strip steak. The Gas Lamp Marriott is also well worth a visit, if only for the Altitude bar with an excellent view of the city and the baseball stadium, the prices are a bit steep though so don't stay for too long. Being a major US Navy base all museums and attractions offer a military discount, anything military in nature will be free (USS Midway for example) and Sea World is still free with your MOD 90 or F1250 and they don't force you to stand up for the "Heroes Salute" when you go to watch Shamu.

San Diego is also home to one of the largest BXs (NX in naval parlance) in the country - it is effectively a small retail park and is well worth a visit.

If you find yourself in a nice restaurant being offered surf and turf consisting of a large rib-eye steak and alaskan crab (the stuff featured on Channel 5), ask for the price first and don't acept the waitress' wine recommendation without looking at the wine list. The aircrew wallah on our visit got stung for $99 for the surf and turf and $160 for two bottles of wine.

Reading the last couple of posts refreshed my memory, dicks last resort was a quality night out, a bit weird when you get in and they are having a napkin fight but really good nite had.

Quick question... what is the appeal in a cook it yourself restaurant? you can do it at home for more than likely a fraction of the price and for twice the steak :PDT_Xtremez_30:

may just be me being foolish as its been a late night/early morning combo but i'm just not getting it.

The embassy suites is also a good hotel 5 min walk from the gaslamp quarter.Nice view of the bay full breakfast included, 2 hours managers (free drinks)cocktails included 5pm-7.
Just behind it is the bar that was used in top gun
