HELP HELP HELP
Looks as if I've screwed up big time with my pc. The story...... the pc has been getting progessively slower over time. I realised that programmes must be running in the backgroud so decided to do something about it. Whilst searching the web I decided to download google updater which included free software google updater, mozilla firefox, pc tools spyware doctor, and a free norton security 2002 software. Now, the pc has almost ground to a halt. So..... what do I do now? How can I remove all this stuff I've downloaded and after I've done that how can I speed up my pc? Someone out there please help me as I'm a complete computer duffer.

Chuffy...... I know what you did is defy logic (Tooo many programs running in the background, so download more :PDT_Xtremez_35: )

Anywho......

The best advice to start off with, is to un-install any $hite you don't use/need. That should get it to a "workable speed".

Assuming Win XP so to get to the program remove, go to.........

Start -> Control Panel.

On the left hand side it will say something like "Switch to Classic View" Click that, then Add/Remove Programs.

That'll bring up a list of all your installed programs. Don't get rid of everything, just stuff you KNOW you won't need!

Give us a shout when you done that, if it's getting better, and I'll shout you some more tips...

Ho Mono, thx for that. Ive now uninstalled all the s***e that I downloaded (I think) and have also uninstalled norton anti-virus. The pc seems to be faster now, any other tips would be very much appreciated. Thx again.

To be honest, the bog standard advice is detailed here....

http://www.e-goat.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=100205&postcount=5

I really do stand by CCleaner (details on the post ^^) it will help to make the pooter alot quicker especially if you use the "Issues" tab. It cleans up the registry which will in turn streamline what your computer is looking for and speed it up lots.

However, if you want uber fast (but be careful on this one) What you need to do, is open the start menu and click "Run..."

Type in MSCONFIG and hit Run

That will bring up a utility which can select/deselect programs that run at startup. Click on the startup tab, and have a look at the list.

This is where a little knowledge goes a long way. Things like iTuneshelper is not required even if you have an iPod. Realplayer is another not needed. Antivirus and firewall is though.

If you need a hand, PM me your MSN and I'll help you sort it by remote assistance.

if all that fails back up any important stuff ie porn and music on to dvd/cd, save game files, pics then my computer, right click hard drive and click format. then when that is complete only install the stuf you need, firewall, anti virus, anti spywear, etc, and finally porn, music and games with the saves.

job done

hope this helps
