I would imagine today he would have been courts martialled for being wreckless for pulling a stunt like that.
 
The story of the RAF's Maritime Strike Wings during WW2 has generally been overshadowed by other elements of the Service. Yet these chaps (with Beafighters and later with Mosquitos) had a casualty rate that exceeded that of Bomber Command and had a devastating effect on enemy shipping.

[I always ponder about the "crew" led by some spirited bloke].

On a side note, I wonder what the Safety Elfs would think of such a thing today ?
