Big hole in our capability! How long before these need replacing with Wedgetail?

The Royal Air Force has begun testing flying the first of it’s fleet of Sentry E-3D airborne early warning aircraft repaired after being taken out of service in October due to electrical wiring problems.

As a result of routine technical inspection on RAF E-3D aircraft, an issue has been identified related to the integrity‎ of the electrical wiring and cabin conditioning system. Safety remains our paramount concern; therefore, the Sentry fleet will only fly again once the ongoing rectification work is complete," a spokesman for the RAF said.

I know of an ex Air Elec (or whatever they are called) who recently came back to his original ground trade of TG1 Avionics as he didn't want to fly on them anymore citing that they (E3-D) are a disaster waiting to happen....

Sorry mate but that is complete rubbish as no one has left citing that.

Do you mean Air Electronic Operator or as they are now called Weapon System Operators? As far as I know They haven't trained any for a while so all that fly on there are long term legacy. Not sure how anyone could return to a trade they did 5 years earlier?

I think he means Airbourne Tech...

Oh I must have just made it up with my fertile little mind then. Not naming any names but he became Eng Ops on 29(R)Sqn a couple of years back as even with the Typhoon 'Q' under his belt he was a bit too rusty for running the desk. Nice bloke as well.

I do know who it is and you are right he is a thoroughly nice chap. I stick by my original statement though and the individual never stated that as the reason for moving. No one has moved back to the TG1 ground environment in well over 3 years (apart from those that haven't met the required training). It's very easy to make statements like 'a disaster waiting to happen' after moving away years ago and without knowing the full current facts, or the work that has been carried out. But hey it is a rumour site.

Are the people who allowed the airworthiness of Sentry to deteriorate to such a poor level being held accountable?

And if not, why not?

Is it a case of airworthiness deterioration or airworthiness Standards changing? W.hat was considered airworthy 30 years ago may not be classed as airworthy now. This could be because we've learnt stuff or the EA is more risk averse at the moment.

Interesting that you quote a 737 deriitive for this role but, it appears, the RAF fraternity are not keen to have them to replace the Nimrod?
If the airworthiness of the E3D is suspect then the same logic should surely be applied on the even older Rivet Joint wiring...modified or not to their new role they will have original looms throughout, having been inspected by a contractor and condition judged as okay through risk mitigation.
