Hi,
Having just been picked up I am posted to Honington, I am going to commute from my home at RAF Wyton.
I wish to join Wyton mess as it it more convinient for functions ETC.

Is this allowed in that I am based at a unit but a member of another units mess?

Many Thanks

Think you have to bs a member of "A" mess. However, not sure.....In my last job we had guys staying with the army and they tried to bully into joining their mess.
Was looked in to and because they were members at High Wycombe the army w
ere told to fark off.
I could be wrong.....

Hope this helps?

SCJ

It is expected that you join the mess of the unit that you are working at, unless its not a RAF base, when you can join your closest RAF Mess.

You'll find that you are enrolled as a full member at Honington, but then can apply for associate membership at Wyton, enabling you to attend the functions.

Having spent a few years at Wyton I'm positive the Mess will welcome you with open arms, i'm sure a quick email to the CMC will sufice in getting you an invite to the functions although you may have to pay a non-member rate. You will be expected to join the Mess at Honnington.

Mess Membership

Mess Membership

SNCO's serving permanently or on temporary duty at any RAF Station are to be accorded Full Membership of that mess (a monthly subscription will be charged). SNCO's not serving permanently or on temporary duty at another Station may apply for Associate Membership of that Mess. Associate Members are required to pay monthly subscriptions at a rate determined by the Mess Committee. Associate members do not enjoy voting rights at General Mess Meetings.

So you will be a Full Member of the Mess at Honington and you can apply for Associate Membership of the Mess at Wyton. You'll be paying two Mess bills though (average £12 - £15 per month at each Mess).

50 years ago THE RAF Sgts' Mess was a collection of all Sgts' messes. All paid in to the GMF (General Messing Fund) and any could request a sub for a mess ball or some such. Thus big messes like Kinloss or St. Mawgan supported tiny little messes (like Strubby - 6 members) so that all SNCOs and W/Os enjoyed similar privileges. Therefore wherever an RAF SNCO or W/O went he was a full member of that Sgts' mess. As aircrew we were always dropping in to different stations, diverted for a coupla three nights or on detachment. I recall we had to pay a small mess bill when we left but it wasn't much.
The Army was very different, each regiment had its own Sgts' mess. We dropped in to a tank regiment Sgts' mess near Pembroke Dock and were asked to sign the visitors' book and wait. The RSM then welcomed us, led us to the bar and said to a pongo, "Sgt. Bloggs - these are YOUR guests." The poor booger had to pay for our drinks all night as we weren't allowed to. The bar stayed open so long as the RSM was present. It didn't open till he arrived and closed when he left.

Navy messes were more free and easy but we had to split up: Sgts to the POs mess, Flt.Sgts to the CPOs mess. Don't know where W/Os went. However at JASS, Londonderry (HMS Sea Eagle, a "land" ship) we insisted on our own "Aircrew Mess" cos POs' and CPOs' mess bars shut promptly at 10 or 10.30. In our own mess we could continue in the RAF Sgts'mess bar tradition of staying open till the last man fell down!
But p'raps its all changed........

Eddy,

WOs or Master Aircrew went to the CPOs mess. Its full title was the WO and CPOs Mess.

As a Sgt I always went to the CPO's mess when aboard. POs always had a separate mess that was more akin to a Cpl's mess.
