‘I work eight to five, Monday to Friday. Two of us man the helpdesk, helping as much as we can over the phone. I’ve done a few civilian courses to increase my knowledge. If necessary, we’ll send a technician out to fix the problem.’

They really should have worded their own website better !!!

yeah i am , but i am thinking otherwise

The difference is, you are joining a new trade that is being created as we speak. We have all been lumped into it from differing backgrounds whether we like it or not.

Remember, you are an outsider looking in.

If you are joining now, by the time you are due streamlining, promotion etc the initial problems should have been ironed out. TG4 is a good idea, it was just the implementation that went awry, but that's a whole new thread.

Hi, I'm one of the `new` tg4 types, if you have any questions that haven't been answered on here already then pm me and I'll be happy to answer them (within reason).

checkout the army?

checkout the army?

Have you checked out the army siggy trades?
If your answer is
"no I don't want to join the army" then have a good think about it.

I didn't want to join the army but find the differences evaporating and the Army looks more appealing for the long term!
I know the grass is always greener

If you need some experience and training then welcome aboard...

TG4 will have much to offer. It is a trade for the future for guys like yourself. It is not meant for old TG3 (who still have to maintain legacy kit) and TG11 blokeys really. We shouldn't have had to worry until we were offered Pre-Employment training on us but they gave us pointless Assimilation Borg training instead. It will come good but will take time for Network Enabled Capabiliy (NEC) to become a reality. Be prepared to work on old legacy kit which isn't a bad thing as it will make you a better all round technician.

in the blue spec sheet for the role it goes on about being out in the field mantaining radars and comms kit and all that, is this troo or are we just desktop support techs in offices.

I'll be honest mate I don't know. All the guys I work beside right now are old TG3. According to the CIS Bible TG4 people like yourself shouldn't be working on equipment calibrations that affect aircraft. i.e. Radars, analogue ground comms. Wether this has changed or has not rigorously been enforced I don't know. There is a guy who has been on before (an instructor at Tossford) called Kev827 who instructs TG4 students like yourself would be. If he is online I would try to speak to him.

There is a big misconception about TG4.

Only 5% of the trade is Helpdeskthe rest could be radar, or any other of the TG3 or TG11 jobs as well as aircraft jobs now.

THAT IS FACT.
