Would anyone be interested in attending a UK Siggies Cup, maybe this year if it can be organised quickly enough.

Basically we are toying with the idea of re instigating the legendary siggies cup and are just putting the feelers out to you fellow goaters to gauge interest.

Obvously Germany had many appealing factors, but that has gone now and it would be a travisity to loose the event for ever.

It would be UK based at a fairly central unit, the format would be the same but over a bank holiday weekend. Arrive Friday, competion Sat and Sun, presentation evening Sunday night, disperse Monday.

The general idea due to lack of accomodation would be to have a festival type environment, everyone camping, bbq areas, marquee, bands, refreshment tents etc.

I am not willing to go into much more detail yet as its only a concept, I am also not willing to divulge our unit, all I will say, is out of all the UK units I can think off it is probably one of the most central and the local night life is spot on and only a few miles away.

Anyone Interested? your thoughts

Feel free to add your comments here or PM them to me on the goat.

Hmm! Digby or Waddo then :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Get the word round then guys, we will need all the support we can if we are going to get this off the ground.

sounds good mate, went to the last siggies cup and everyone was talking about where it was gonna be back then, 4 years later and still no joy so good luck with it, just make sure there's a whore house near by to relive the germany experience :PDT_Xtremez_14:

I'm sure we can get a few teams from 90SU.

Probably a better place to host it. If you are going to make it a festival style weekend, better off not being too near Lincoln.

If there is a local town right on the doorstep, you would end up wasting money on bands, BBQ etc. Either do a festival weekend, or a weekend on the p1ss in a town.

If you can organise it I'm sure it will take off again. I think many TG4ers have been wanted the Siggies Cup back, just that there seems to be no funds anywhere! I'm currently across the pond so won't be able to make it, but if it took off I can assure you I'd give it my full support and try to get a team there from where ever I get posted to on return to the UK!! Good luck!

Probably a stupid question, but in the 9 years I spent in TG11 I have never heard of the Siggies Cup before. In my minds eye I see teams of ex Telegs/TPOs/WOPs in drinking competitions...... am I anywhere near the mark?????

Not too far off Sid.

How have you never heard of the Siggies Cup, you must have been in during 70s and stuck in the deepest darkest hole available in the UK, it has been infamous since the 80's.

I was in 60/70's but managed to spend most of my time overseas. Wish I could have participated, I certainly drank enough to further the Keo, Tiger and Tennants breweries.

Having been stationed at Rhein'd for a few of the siggies cups I think it would be great to bring it back.

My only thought is that one of the great things about it then was that it was in Germany.
People came out to go into town then attempted to play football with a hang-over. For the players this could be horrible; for the spectators it was funny. You don't see the goal keeper in premiership footbal pucking his guts up :PDT_Xtremez_30:

It was also a chance to make some connections with the guys 'n' gals posted at 11SU to sort some good deals from the NAAFI!

I don't think the cup would be the same if held in the UK but this is my opinion. I now stand by for any flak.

I'm kind of erring towards agreeing with you there.

I remember a certain Sgt commenting that one Siggies Cup was going to be "All about the football". He was of course, utterly f*cking wrong ... it was never, ever about the football.

Hence when the Royal Sigs from Bruggen were out warming up at 6 in the morning, everyone thought they were cnuts!

If I was organising it in the UK I'd be worried about getting the OK from the camp and finding a local drinking "centre" that wouldn't have a problem with that many drunkards descending on it! The JHQ scuffers and German locals were pretty laid back when it came to all that!

Getting all :S thinking about it now! Ha ha!

Yeh the Sigs did take it a bit more seriously!

I would love to find a station with that amount of transit for starters! People would have to book themselves into local hotels etc. That would mean someone staying sober to drive to the cup after the night out!

Good point. I can't imagine the local town suddenly being invaded by a load of 'semi professional' football plays/drinkers and not getting any hassle...

Bring back the Cold War so we can get some units going over in Germany again:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I think your all missing the point, it will never happen in Germany again, which is a massive loss, we all know how good it was, but that was the past and there is nothing any of us can do about it.....

However being in the UK could be a lot of fun too, especially where the local night life is good, and 200 footballers wouldn't even make a dent on the tons of bars and clubs around this location.

At the end of the day Germany was great, but its gone. The siggies cup could happen again, if people just open up to a bit of change, and realize that fun can be had anywhere.

Siggies Cup Re-birth

Siggies Cup Re-birth

I too was at Rheindahlen during 03-06 and the Siggies Cup was always an epic event but took alot of organising. 16 Sigs would always pitch up at 6am for their training just as we and every other normal person was getting in from MG.Still pushed them in the final a few times though, even with the blood diluting our alchohol stream.I would love the "Siggies Cup" to make a come back but as many other people have said, it would just not be the same but I maybe wrong.Good luck and if it goes ahead, I would certainly be pitching up to Stagger around the pitch.
