I remember watching the first documentary about him just a few months after the Falklands War; it was pretty searing stuff showing the sights of his still raw injuries and the ear-piercing sounds of his agonies as they treated his burns. There was real concern even then as to what of him they could save and what his long-term prospects were - he was a horribly disfigured young welsh squaddy and burns treatments were very much more basic than they are today.

Over the years there were 2 (?) further follow-up documentaries about his treatment & recovery where his stabilisation & recovery were visible.

I heard him speak a few years back at the Birmingham Military Tattoo and he was very good.

There were times during that first documentary when one feared for his life & future - but he has shown tremendous spirit &, I am sure, inspired the recovery of a great many war-wounded and burns victims since.

Happy Birthday Simon.

Simons War & Simon's Peace. Marvellous and horrible fly-on-the-wall documentaries.
