Morning all,

Could anyone help me with this one?

I've just spent 6 weeks away on ops attached to a formed unit and holding high acting rank (unpaid). The unit I was attached to have said they'd like to write me and insert for my next SJAR but having been into PSF to ask about having one raised I've been told I can't have one unless I've been deployed for 60 days or more. I've had a look in the JSP, and it does say in there that anyone deploying for a period of 60 days should have an insert, but there's nothing in there at all to say that you can't have one if you deploy for less time.

The best they said I could do is to get the squadron to write an email to my RO who can then comment on my performance. Now I went away holding the rank of acting Sgt on ops, didnt get paid for it, found myself running the trade desk on my own for a time and I think that, not only will my 1st RO not be able to do it justice as it'll be ruduced to a couple of sentences, but will have to cut out other things from my primary role to fit it in.

Is there anyway I can go about redressing this and have an insert raised for this time away? I don't think it's too unreasonable an ask.

The short answer appears to be no. I would have expected that the e-mail to your 1st RO is the correct way, for them to include a couple of sentences and give you the credit for Acting Rank. I know your not far away from the 60 days, but where would you then draw the line? Someone who is away 4 weeks, 2 weeks? After all an SJAR is for 52 weeks.

Get it all in your brag sheet and give a copy of the email to your 1st RO and hopefully your 1st RO will do it justice.

They are pretty constrained time wise when reading SJAR's and a well written couple of sentences will probably hold more value than an MPAR mostly filled with filler because you just weren't there long enough.

There was a rumour of a subject using the comments box as an extension of the performance, however I wouldn't recommend it.

Im not sure sure on this. When i was a holding crow I was written an insert slip by OC PSF for an incident I handled, it was included in my OJAR, I think the "ways and means" act applies. Get it sent /written up to your 1RO and if he/she leaves it out remind them about it.

E Mail from OC to RO . Otherwise there'd be so many inserts we'd never be doing anything else

If your 1RO can't fit it in, then he / she should talk to your 2RO and he / she should get it in the report. I'd ask the Unit to email (or better still, actually write a letter) to your Boss - or even better, to your CO who should pass it down the line to your management. If all else fails, you can tick the box for 'volunteer for commission' which means you get a 3RO, and they can mention it. That last point is sort of 'playing the game' a bit, but if it's that good a write up then it's probably worth it.

Of course, all of this is only relevant if they send a letter / email worthy of inclusion....

This.

You have been informed you cannot get an insert for a 6 week attachment. However, doing the acting up and doing it well is EXACTLY what the board is looking for as evidence for promotion.

Your 1st/2nd RO should have no issues including comments from another source ie it is like a secondary duty where the OC of said secondary duty sends his comments on how well you built that BBQ.

I would contact the OC of the Unit you were attached to (or the person who is offering to put down a few words for you) and politely request they send an email to your RO's (try and get a copy yourself too!).
