hi people, good to have joined the goat at last and I seek your help!

I am posted in Jan to a unit outside commutable distance (around 150 miles) from my current SFA. I have applied (and been accepted) to remain in SFA as my daughter is in last 2 years of education. I will therefore be working days mon-fri and expect to travel at the weekends and live in the Mess during the week.

As I am useless at expenses and entitlements, could someone let me know what I will be entitled to/have to pay eg food and accom please?

Many thanks

Welcome!

You will pay for food, but not accommodation. Put a leave app in for every weekend so you get 2 days' food money back.

You will get GYH @ 150 miles - this will be started by the clerk that arrives you. Not sure how much it is, but there is a rate table in the JSP 752 which will tell you.

The good news is if you are posted to a CRL RAF Station then from April 2011 you will only have to pay for the meals you take and your food charges will stop. Or whenever CRL rolls out!

First I've heard about keeping SFA on posting, I thought it wasn't the case? Is it done on a case by case basis or is (theoretically) available to all, all of the time?

It's in one of the JSP's. If you have kids in exam periods etc you can apply to keep them where they are to prevent disrupting their education.

I forget which JSP it is, I have it printed out at work. I'll have a look tomorrow unless anyone else has the reference to hand?

Details are in JSP 464 Part 1 Chapter 8 Section VII 'Retention of SFA/SSFA'.

0822. Circumstances where retention of SFA/SSFA on assignment. Whilst the entitlement to SFA/SSFA normally ceases at the previous duty station on the date of assignment, it is admissible in certain circumstances and for specified periods of time for personnel to apply to the HIC to retain their SFA/SSFA at their previous duty station beyond the date of assignment as an extension of their entitlement (Para 0322). The duration of the retention should in all cases be specified, restricted to the minimum period necessary, and not exceed a period of 12 months (except VCDS 45 Minute List personnel).

and in this case:

g. Educational. MOD recognises that there are specific special circumstances regarding the education of Service children under which retention of SFA/SSFA is admissible as detailed below. Families should seek advice from HQ CEAS (Children’s Education Advisory Service) Trenchard Lines, Upavon (tel: 01980 618244) who are best placed to consider the circumstances of the case, and where appropriate, to issue an impact statement recommending retention of SFA/SSFA on educational grounds. The educational grounds for retention of SFA/SSFA are as follows:

(1) Cases where children are reaching critical examination periods where retention of SFA/SSFA is admissible for up to 4 months (one academic term) leading up to the final public examination. In cases where it is not possible for the child to transfer schools whilst within 3 years of public examinations e.g. because of school availability in the new location, regional syllabus differences or particular Continuous Assessment Work requirements, retention of SFA/SSFA will be possible up to the public examination, which will include only GCSE, A/S level, A Level and/or other nationally recognised, full time, higher and further education courses up to and including 1st Degree level (where the child lives permanently in the SFA/SSFA and meets the definition of dependant offspring at Chapter 1, Annex D, sub para 7) and the recognised equivalent courses in Scotland. This is subject to successful re-application after 12 months.

(2) Where a child who may have special education needs is already undergoing statutory assessment at their current school, SFA/SSFA may be retained for 2 academic terms or until the end of the academic year as appropriate, subject to CEAS issuing an impact statement.
