Hi there,

Ive been looking into the possibility of joining the rauxaf and Ive got a few questions...

1. Ive been looking at the fitness requirements and found this table:

http://www.rafreserves.com/how_to_join/start_here.htm

Is this serious? Its really low and thats coming from someone who is quite unfit at the moment. I take it that the shuttle run is instead of the 1.5 mile run?

2. Im not really near any rauxaf unit so Ive been looking at the intelligence squadrons (who recruit nationally) and it looks like a genuinely intresting trade. I just have one question: It says on job opportunities that for intelligence officer, you must already be in the airman ranks. Do they also offer the intelligence analyst role (for airmen) but just dont have that on the website? I have no previous military experience so I cannot join as an officer - it seems to suggest that officer is the only job available meaning that I cannot join? (Hope you understand that).

Last question: What happens on weekend training? It will take me up to 3 hours to travel to waddington so do I have to be at the unit on the friday? If so, around what time do I need to be there? If we just arrive to "report in" and then begin training the next day, thats fine but I cant travel to waddington in time to begin training at like 7pm on the friday. I take it that weekend training is residential and any accomodation will be provided...

Sorry for the hard-to-understand questions, thanks in advance.

James

Your best bet is to contact one of the Aux Sqns direct and pose the questions to them someone may be able to help on here but info from the horses mouth is best plus it will show a genuine interest.

I did think of that but I couldnt find any contact details apart from the application section of the units website.

Here is a link to an enquiry form (this is from the Int guys at Waddington) just fill in the form and ask your questions someone far more able to answer your questions will deal with it.

All the Aux websites have these forms and addresses so get busy:PDT_Xtremez_32:

The fitness test on the RAuxAF site is now out-of-date. Still the same format but the levels have increased and it's now twice a year.

Not sure where in the UK you are but 4626 Sqn at Lyneham recruit nationally and are recruiting heavily at the moment.

Do you know what they've been increased to? I could do with knowing so I know what to aim for.

Speaking as someone who's going through Officer (RauxAF) Training at present, most of my colleagues ( in fact all), joined the ranks first, and then were selected by the unit for a commission.

You might want to try contacting a unit, and discussing that with them.

Thanks 4th.

Are the fitness standards for the rauxaf the same as the RAF? If not then can someone direct me to where I can find them.

Thanks.

Regt deployments will almost certainly be as an individual reinforcement to a regular Regt Squadron - a working assumption would be: 2 months pre-deployment training, 4-6 months deployment, and 1 month or so post-deployment leave (you could return to work during this time if you get the ok).

However, it will probably be a couple of years before you are sufficiently trained to be in the frame for this, and deployment lengths can change.

How many times? Used to be 12 months max in 3 years, but I believe a recent Act of Parliament has changed this also...

I would say, don't sweat the details yet (far too soon) - just be clear in your own mind that the RAF will want some return on the pay and training it gives you!

There used to be lots of trades in the RAuxAF, including MT and ground equipment, but most have been binned over the last five years. Have a look at the trades available on the reserves website, but you'll be lucky to find anything other than Regt, FP, supply and admin...
