How about "Forgotten sons" by Marillion

The last couple of verses have always summed it up for anyone that did anything in Northern Ireland and chilled me to the core too.

You're just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle
Where the children's stony glances mourn
Your death in a terrorist's smile
The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves,
Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell
Forgotten Sons, Forgotten Sons

From the dolequeue to the regiment a profession in a flash,
But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash,
On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier count the cost,
For a second you'll be famous but labelled posthumous

Then earlier on in the song is something that has always stood out in my mind, we may have done and are still doing our jobs, and bloody well for all the problems that are given to us, it's all down to "Them" counting on the fact of our professionalisim and mutual support:

And so as I patrol in the valley of the shadow of the Tricolour
I must fear evil, for I am but mortal and mortals can only die
Asking questions, pleading answers from the nameless faceless watchers
That parade the carpeted corridors of Whitehall
Who order desecration, mutilation, verbal m*sturbation in the guarded bureaucratic wombs

Minister, Minister care for your children,
Order them not into damnation
To eliminate those who would trespass against you,
For whose is the kingdom, the power, the glory for ever and ever
Amen

HERE'S ONE FROM PINK

No war related list would be complete without a 'Nam vet....... although I've never seen any make sick cats and dogs better :PDT_Xtremez_09:

No YouTube (IGS) but here are the lyrics for a couple of others:

Disposable Heroes (Metallica)

Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
Running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
A servant `til I fall

[Chorus:]
Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Do just as we say
Finished here, Greeting Death
He's yours to take away

Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward
You servant
You blindman
[End Chorus]

Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
Sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you wear, glory seeker trends
Bodies fill the fields I see
The slaughter never ends

[Chorus]

{Why, Am I dying?
Kill, having no fear
Lie, live off lying
Hell, Hell is here} x2

I was born for dying

Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend
Alone I clench my gun

[Chorus]

{Back to the front}x5.

And Mandatory Suicide (Slayer), a thought provoking, happy little number about conscription.

Murder at your every foot step
A childs toy sudden death
Sniper blazes you through your knees
Falling down can you feel the heat
Burn!

Ambushed by the spray of lead
Count the bullet holes in your head
Offspring sent out to cry
Living mandatory suicide
Suicide

Holes burn deep in your chest
Raked by machine gun fire
Screaming soul sent out to die
Living mandatory suicide
Suicide

Lying, dying, screaming in pain
Begging, pleading, bullets drip like rain
Minds explode, pain sheers to your brain
Radical amputation, this is insane

Fly swatter stakes, drive through your chest
Spikes impale you as youre forced off the crest
Soldier of misfortune
Hunting with bated breath

A vile smell, like tasting death
Dead bodies, dying and wounded
Litter the city streets
Shattered glass, bits of clothing and human deceit
Dying terror
Bloods cheap, its everywhere
Mandatory suicide, massacre on the front line

I always liked the Line in Career Opporunities by the Clash.

The "I hate the RAF" line always got sung at the top of my voice when stuck at tossford on my Fitters Course.

Muse - A Soldier's Poem.

[FONT=Verdana,Arial,Geneva,sans-serif]Throw it all away
Lets lose ourselves
Because there's no one left for us to blame
It's a shame
We're all dying
And do you think you deserve your freedom?

How could you send
Us so far away from home
When you know damn well that this is wrong
I will still lay down my life for you
And do you think you deserve your freedom?

No, I don't think you do
There's no justice in the world
There's no justice in the world
And there never was

Ok, so there's a lot of Maiden but you have to admit they are one of the few bands who do a lot of military/history stuff, maybe that's got something to do with Bruce being a history Professor. Even if you don't like metal I reccommend Aces High, Run Silent Run Deep and Tailgunner.
