Sound mirrors

A friend asked me today if I knew anything about sound mirrors to which my answer was very little.
These were apparently the forerunners to RADAR using dishes to focus sound waves to detect aircraft before they were seen. They did work to a point with slow moving aircraft but were rendered redundant with the advent of RADAR.

IIRC one of the episodes of 'Coast' visited one, very interesting stuff. Clever really.

A very recent episode (in the last 2 weeks) of one of the numerous countryside programmes showed one of the surviving arrays down south and they did a not very scientific test but they did give a couple of minutes extra warning.....I do hope they get protected as part of our history and not just torn down.
