I have been asked to sort out a couple of Staff Rides now that we have been given the OK to proceed.

My question is does anyone know the answer to what expenses you are entitled to claim? I guess my answer is two-fold - a SR day and a trip to say france?

Before you ask, I have asked education, PSF here and at other units and no-one seems to know much....and what they tell me contradicts what the other said - you get my drift!

I am thinking if you go on a one-dayer then if you live in you should get a packed lunch and if you live-out bring your own and therefore can't claim anything. For the overnighters abroad then you could claim subsistence and IE - living-inners would not pay food charges (psf action?).....????

Anyone with any definitive gen please anser.....aaaarrrgrgghhhhh

When I org'd one overseas; we got T&S and IE and the FD section funded all educational aspects of the visits (museum entry, books etc etc).

Uk rules for one day are basic, packed lunch or bring your own.

Overseas, you are entitled to accom at B&B rates, then lunch and dinner.

Either take an advance with you or claim in arrears on JPA on return. The Admin Order is yor Auth for Claims.

If you need more detials gen PM me as have done a few of these SR's and know more than i can type!!!!

Guys/Girls

This might not be the right forum for this and I'm not fishing......but in the current economic climate, are staff rides really justified?

De-compression trips with a staff-ride theme......yes, but just for the sake of 'personal development'?????

For what it's worth, I've always agreed that if it's offered you should take it, but don't you think the money would be better spent elsewhere?

I think its justified if you keep it taut and impose tight control on Expenditure. The benefits of a well run Staff ride are huge, but like many things imitaions are expensive and unreliable!!!!.

Tight times, but with good management it can still work, but i would limit the destination to France/Bel and self drive.

That puts a crimp on my, otherwise damn fine plan for a staff ride to South Africa to examine the effect that an Air Power would have had on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Would those fine British Army chappies have been defeated by the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana if they had had some JTACs capable of calling in some fast air or aviation CAS? Would they have needed to enter into battle if air Combat ISTAR had been available and/or aviation permited greater mobility?

Mind you, if they hadn't been defeated then, then there would have been no Rorke's Drift and therefore, no Zulu film, and possibly no Michael Caine!

Bear, you put forward a damn fine argument for justification there.

If I was in Allowances, you'd be sorted.

Had a great staff ride to America looking at American Civil War. Lots of air power in that one. Allowed to claim everything including guides etc.

Thanks Queenie.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Happiness is a rather large pension and a shiney new B&Q dustcoat.

Madness! I really don't get it. Serious question.....what did you glean from it which will benefit you in the work environment.

I'm not taking the p!ss....I truly don't get it's benefit to the Service.

I can't quite recall all the details but I'm sure I have seen something in writing fairly recently stating that Staff Rides were limited to NW Europe only ie the BENELUX & France area.

If I can find it again I'll post an extract.

It's Duty

It's Duty

Any Staff Ride that is more than 5 hours and 5 miles and there are no subsidised catering facilities available should attract the payment of appropriate allowances.

This doesn't mean you can spend £26 pounds on a sandwich and coffee.

With regards taking a packed lunch, if there are no refridgerated storage available for food then there is no requirement to take one, this arguement died a long time ago.

Staff rides are worthwhile and should be encouraged, I went on three last year (just day trips around the country) and not only learned about bits of the RAF I never knew about but I also thoroughly enjoyed them and felt enthused about the RAF again.

Oberon you're far too kind.

You don't think others could see it as a thinly veiled attempt to get the taxpayer to pay for me to watch Southern Hemisphere Rugby and/or visit some vineyards? (Not that I would, obviously; it's just that some people are just far too suspicious)

Loads of Wg Cdrs doing not a lot, great excuse for a short holiday thanks to tax payer.

I also done a trip to Berlin, two or three Units canning at the same time. A rather nice shopping trip to Xmas markets, thanks to Air Power.
